Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from ABET-accredited program or equivalent evaluation

• Develop understanding of protection and control design up to 500 kV (one lines, three lines, schematics, layouts)
• Perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, insulation coordination
• Perform calculations using client-specified software and standards
• Interpret specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
• Check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate with other design disciplines
• Visit sites and advise on P&C issues during construction

Job description

Position Overview

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Ability to understand protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment
• Ability to design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settings
• Ability to understand SCADA communication design
• Quickly develop a basic understanding of protection and control design for utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
• Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
• Ability to perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
• Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
• Ability to check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines
• Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• 0 to 2 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
