Job summary

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is seeking an Engineer at its Los Angeles headquarters. You will perform structural calculations and seismic evaluations for water infrastructure, prepare detailed construction documents, and conduct fieldwork to ensure resilient project delivery.

Responsibilities include leading projects, coordinating vendors, reviewing submittals, and presenting findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and six years of relevant experience, two years at Associate Engineer level.
  • Master’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, two years at Associate Engineer level.
  • Experience in structural analysis and design for buildings and non-building structures; 2D/3D FEM modeling using SAP2000, ETABS, RISA 3D, or similar programs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review structural design criteria, calculations, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports for water treatment, conveyance, and distribution systems.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee projects to monitor scope, quality, budget, and schedule.
  • Lead and perform site and construction inspections, structural evaluations, and submittal reviews to resolve performance, operation, or reliability issues.
  • Lead project teams, oversee the work of external vendors and consultants, and negotiate contracts or agreements to ensure seamless execution.
  • Conduct studies, lead the preparation of technical documents and reports, and deliver oral presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the planning and execution of technical tests, investigations of existing structures and equipment, and special assignments.

There is currently 1 openingfor the Engineer role located at our Headquarters location in Los Angeles.

In this role, you’ll serve as an Engineer combining technical expertise and hands-on design to support critical water infrastructure. You’ll perform structural calculations and seismic evaluations for buildings, tunnels, and water treatment facilities; prepare detailed plans, sections, and construction specifications; and conduct both office and fieldwork to ensure resilient project delivery. This is an opportunity to shape water conveyance systems and play a key role in safeguarding water infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

This job announcement has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work being performed by employees in this classification / job.

Schedule: 44/36 Monday through Friday/Every other Friday off. Monday through Thursday 9 hours per day, 8 hours per day every other Friday. Start times are no earlier than 6 am and end times are no later than 6 pm.

Hybrid: Metropolitan’s current practice in this position is a hybrid work schedule. This typically includes two days a week in person and the other days remote. This is subject to change dependent on organizational needs. In addition, a telework policy is scheduled for negotiations and once completed and implemented, will provide final direction on the hybrid schedule.

Travel: This position will require travel to various District facilities throughout the service area.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and six years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level;

OR

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level.

Relevant Experience is defined as: a combination of experience in structural analysis and design of both building AND non-building type structures; AND experience in 2D and 3D finite element modeling using FEM programs such as SAP2000, ETABS, RISA 3D, or other similar programs.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing, and registrations:

License(s):
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent that allows you to drive during your employment is required at time of application.
  • License in good standing as a California Professional Engineer is required at the time of application.
