The role focuses on Metallurgical Services, collaborating with operations, sales, and finance to support customers with engineering, cost estimating, project coordination, and new product development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Metallurgical)
  • 5+ years of experience working within the heavy equipment industry
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidEdge or SolidWorks)
  • Proficiency in GD&T and design for manufacturing
  • Proficiency in CNC programming (MasterCAM)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • AutoCAD experience for plant layout or legacy equipment
  • FEA experience (using Ansys)
  • Fabrication experience

Responsibilities

  • Oversee complex engineering projects from scope to delivery within budgets and schedules.
  • Provide technical and commercial support for Products, Parts, and Services; assist proposals.
  • Assess capability needs, participate in meetings, drive standardization and cost drivers.
  • Act as technical lead; review designs, ensure quality, and coordinate with stakeholders

Job Title: EngineerJob Description

The Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting the Benton Harbor facility and other locations within the North America Steel Industry. This position focuses on the Metallurgical Services business, working closely with operations management, sales, and finance to support customers with engineering, technical specifications, cost estimating, project coordination, and development of new products and services. The role emphasizes quality, safety, reliability, and operational performance while supporting R&D initiatives and new business development.

Responsibilities
  • PROJECT EXECUTION: Oversee complex engineering projects, including scope definition, budgets, schedules, and resource planning. Track performance, manage hours/costs, and ensure projects meet profitability and delivery targets.

  • COMMERCIAL SUPPORT: Develop knowledge of and provide technical support for Products, Spare Parts, and Maintenance Services. Collaborate with Sales to develop technical and commercial proposals supporting customer inquiries. Contribute to contract negotiations supporting commercial and technical deliverables.

  • OPERATIONAL & STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT: Evaluate capability needs and technical risks; address skill gaps and support development plans. Actively participate in engineering meetings to drive standardization, innovation, and continuous improvement. Define proposal scopes, pricing assumptions, timelines, and engineering cost drivers. Provide operational support at the Benton Harbor location, including product processing, project management, quality support, failure analysis, and continuous improvement activities.

  • TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP: Serve as the technical point contact for facilities and customers. Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as Sales, engineering, procurement, finance, and operations, as well as external stakeholders like Customers, Suppliers, International Sources, and internal Global Business Units. Review and approve engineering designs, specifications, and technical documentation. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, customer standards, and internal quality requirements. Work with vendors/suppliers to ensure technical understanding while developing supply chain alternatives. Manage R&D and Business Development initiatives focused on product performance and emerging technologies.

Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Metallurgical)

  • 5+ years of experience working within the heavy equipment industry

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (Solidedge or SolidWorks)

  • Proficiency in GD&T and design for manufacturing

  • Proficiency in CNC programming (MasterCAM)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • AutoCAD experience for plant layout or legacy equipment

  • FEA experience (using Ansys)

  • Fabrication experience

Work Environment

The Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager and work closely with leadership at the Benton Harbor location. The role involves some domestic travel (10%) and requires daily communication with leadership. The Benton Harbor location manufactures and refurbishes equipment for the steel industry, offering a dynamic environment where the engineer will gain a wide variety of experience and autonomy.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Benton Harbor, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.87 - $45.68/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
