Job summary

Holt CAT in Irving, Texas is seeking a 2nd shift Engine Shop Service Technician to perform inspections, diagnoses, and repairs on industrial gas or diesel engines. You will work with a team to meet customer needs and follow established procedures while using hand and pneumatic tools and maintaining safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of related mechanical experience preferred.
  • Experience with natural gas or diesel engines is advantageous.
  • Ability to read and follow service procedures and schematics.

Job description

Holt CAT is the largest Caterpillar dealership of heavy equipment in the United States. We have a full‑time 2nd shift Engine Shop Service Technician position available at our Irving, Texas location. The hours of the position are Monday‑Friday from 3 PM to 1 AM.

This position demonstrates the ability to perform basic to moderate inspections, diagnoses, and repairs on natural gas or diesel engines or related components, following established procedures and guidelines. Works as a member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfy customer needs and achieve departmental goals.

Essential Functions
  • Performs disassembly and assembly of industrial gas or diesel engines or related components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of estimating, planning, and controlling the cost of repair jobs.
  • Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return.
  • Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps them in good, clean, orderly condition.
  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Works overtime as required by workload and customer needs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities such as ProTech Technician Training Paths.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of industrial natural gas or diesel engines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.
  • Quality control analysis skills – conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Operation and control skills – controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills – determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and an overhead crane.
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated finger movements to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand information.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information presented via spoken words and sentences.
Additional Requirements
  • Must have hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard).
  • Must have appropriate tooling equipment to complete the job.
Education and Experience
  • Two or more years of work‑related skill, knowledge, or experience is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
  • Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet, and climbs ladders or equipment.
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment.
  • Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work.
Work Environment
  • Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts.
  • May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Noise level may be loud at times.
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high‑pressure water, and high‑speed rotating equipment.
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment.
  • Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places.
Travel
  • Travel may be required for training.
