Job summary

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks a First Assistant Engineer for the R/V Atlantis in December 2026. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, you will supervise engine department operations, maintain machinery and safety systems, and support the ship’s schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from a sea service academy or equivalent work experience.
• Must hold U.S. Coast Guard license with Unlimited Horsepower for Motor Vessels.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, HVAC, hydraulics, and shipboard operations.

Responsibilities

• Plan, assign and supervise engine department work and watches.
• Assist Chief Engineer in maintenance planning around ship schedules.
• Maintain machinery logs, spare parts, and consumables inventories.
• Ensure safety devices and HVAC systems are in proper working order.
