Job description

Location: Auburn Hills, MI

Engine Calibration Engineer

defining, improving, and deploying model-based and physics-based calibration methods for gasoline engine applications. Creates repeatable workflows, templates, validation criteria, and model correlation methods that enable application calibrators to deliver robust SS Nominal, SS Emissions, Off-Nominal, and Transient Calibration, bridging physical system behavior, simulation models, and production-intent quality expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead gasoline base calibration methodology (torque model, spark, knock, combustion, airflow, fuel, boost, VVT, EGR, idle, startability) plus SS Emissions, Off-Nominal, and Transient calibration methods.
  • Define release-readiness criteria, checklists, and documentation standards for calibration freeze, software release, and program milestones.
  • Develop model-based/physics-based methods with defined inputs, assumptions, limitations, and acceptance criteria; build/guide virtual models to reduce reliance on physical testing.
  • Define model correlation methods across vehicle, engine/propulsion dyno, HIL/SIL/MIL, and virtual datasets to close simulation-to-physical gaps.
  • Standardize methodology toolchain use: MATLAB, Simulink, ETAS INCA, MDA, dSPACE Automation, ControlDesk.
  • Build structured root-cause analysis and issue-resolution templates; capture lessons learned and reusable countermeasures across applications.
  • Define validation/test-planning methods (dyno, vehicle, HIL/SIL/MIL, virtual) and maturity/readiness criteria for program reviews and launches.
  • Mentor engineers, align CoE and cross-functional teams, and drive consistent documentation and repeatable calibration workflows.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Engineering or related field.
  • 5 years in gasoline engine calibration, calibration methodology, engine system development, powertrain controls, or model-based/physics-based development.
  • Prior experience on dyno calibration on Boosted/TJI engine technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of ICE subsystems: combustion, valvetrain, fuel, boost, EGR, aftertreatment, thermal protection, transient behavior, emissions controls.
  • Hands-on experience in base calibration areas (torque model, spark, knock, combustion, airflow, fuel, boost, VVT, EGR, idle, startability, emissions, off-nominal, transient).
  • Understanding of release workflows, validation planning, optimization methods, and control-system interactions.
  • Experience collecting/interpreting calibration data from dyno, vehicle, HIL, or virtual environments.
  • Proficiency with ETAS INCA, MDA, dSPACE Automation, ControlDesk, MATLAB, Simulink, and data analytics tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, cross-functional influence, and clear technical communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in engineering.
  • Experience with spark ignition controls, production calibration release, or process ownership.
  • Experience with validation trips, altitude/environmental testing, launch support, and maturity assessments.
  • Experience with DOE, engine modeling, neural networks, reactive problem solving, statistics, or advanced simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with Model Advisor/MXAM, MDS, Simulink Requirements, SystemDesk, RTC/RQM, DNG, or SLDD-to-A2L/FBDD workflows.
