Job summary

The Madison Metropolitan School District is seeking a Substitute Teacher (Guest/Permit Teacher, Certified substitute) to provide continuity in learning by implementing classroom instruction during absences of the regular teacher.

Under building supervision, the role includes building connections, managing behavior, following lesson plans, and communicating student progress to the permanent teacher. Roles support diverse learners and an inclusive environment.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher for permit/guest substitute teacher.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in education for a certified teacher.
• Active Wisconsin DPI teaching license or Substitute Teaching license (can be obtained after onboarding).
• Experience working with children and youth.
• Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction to students following lesson plans and use recommended materials.
• Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to ensure a cohesive learning experience.
• Establish clear objectives and expectations during class and manage behavior.
• Engage students individually and in groups to support inclusive learning.
• Create reports for the permanent teacher on student progress and outcomes.
• Maintain a positive learning environment and adapt to changing assignments.
