Job summary

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law seeks a Communications Engagement Writer to lead planning, writing, editing and publishing high-quality content that educates audiences and promotes the organization’s mission.

The ideal candidate will translate civil rights issues into engaging narratives, manage multiple projects, and collaborate across the organization to strengthen online and offline communications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, writing, communications or journalism or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Three to five years of full-time professional writing experience in an advocacy or non-profit setting, ideally civil rights.
  • Familiarity with modern civil rights and racial justice issues and organizations.
  • Experience crafting emails and other content for external audiences as part of digital outreach.
  • Experience writing for executive level staff and maintaining institutional voice.
  • Strong knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and AP style; first-person voice.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, draft, and edit content for emails, publications, blog posts and other website content for digital marketing, as well as Op-eds, talking points, and other material as needed.
  • Translate complex civil rights legal information into engaging, accessible content that explains work clearly.
  • Proofread and copyedit for the Communications department.
  • Ensure clarity, accuracy, brand alignment and consistency in messaging, style, tone and visual presentation.
  • Craft talking points and remarks for speaking engagements and essays for special publications.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Earned Media on op-eds and related materials.
  • Manage the organization’s annual report production.
  • Coordinate email program calendar with the Director of Digital Media and Development Team.
  • Support content creation to cultivate online audiences and storytelling.
  • Draft internal and external communications templates and documents for various departments.
  • Route content for review and approval.
