Job Title:Engagement and Alumni Relations Consultant Department:Advancement | Development General

Position Overview

The Engagement Consultant is a critical member of the Vice President of Wexner Medical Center (WMC)/Health Science College (HSC) Advancement’s team, directly responsible for executing activities that support successful engagement of significant donors and leadership volunteers with WMC leadership. Serves as a partner with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)/Executive Vice President (EVP) of WMC’s team, facilitating requests related to donor interactions and communications and serving as a conduit for inquiries related to Advancement activities. Reporting to the Senior Director of Principal Gifts, the Engagement Consultant serves as a strategic liaison with medical center leadership, supports and manages Advancement’s strategic engagement plans with community leadership and supports campaign/fundraising events.

The Consultant analyzes information and engages in responsible, independent thinking to initiate resolutions in response to inquiries. This role is responsible for managing communication, projects and processes directly related to the CEO/EVP for WMC and the Vice President (VP) for WMC/HSC Advancement. This role also champions the efficient operations and professional image of the CEO/EVP’s office and exercises considerable discretion and good judgment in handling information and taking care of matters of a highly confidential and critical nature. They are expected to provide superior customer service in a fast-paced environment; be organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks and projects; maintain confidentiality and use good judgment when working with sensitive information; be proficient with MS Office programs; be fiscally responsible; and anticipate the needs of and readily adapt to different priorities and people. The candidate is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to effectively balance multiple priorities and time demands and provide exceptional customer service. This role requires someone highly organized and detail-oriented to manage numerous complex requests from multiple sources and ensure clear tracking through to completion.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leads efforts with implementing engagement plan for principal gift level prospects and donors; Drives the collection and recording of prospect identification, cultivation, and engagement data; Strategically supports developing, implementing, monitoring, and enhancing strategies and tactics for principal gift prospects that promote engagement; Works with the Senior Director to execute engagement strategies and programs related to principal gift (PG) donors; Creates and implements materials and correspondence to keep projects on track; Completes research and gathers information related to funding priorities and opportunities; Works closely with VP, CEO/EVP, Donor Experience, and partners across the university on the implementation and management of high-end, comprehensive cultivation and stewardship strategies for Ohio State’s most significant benefactors; Works with the Senior Director of Principal Gifts, VP and the CEO/EVP’s office to execute high-level donor meetings and events; Participates in event work, including but not limited to extending invitations and tracking responses; Communicates and coordinates with colleagues across the university; Responds verbally and in writing to inquiries from staff, donors, volunteers and university administrators.

Provides strategic direction and oversight with regards to special events and advancement requests for the VP, the CEO/EVP, and multiple Wexner Medical Center Leaders; Proactively reviews, manages and prioritizes complex projects and schedules; Proactively plans for meeting needs including the creation of agendas, briefings and other written materials; Leads the acknowledgement and request for development correspondence process; Serves as the liaison to Executive Assistants who manage complex calendars in order to determine strategic use of time; Interfaces with a variety of people including university and hospital leadership, major/principal donors, volunteers, faculty, staff and general public; Researches and resolves issues and proposes courses of action, suggests process improvements or other opportunities to improve projects without direction provided by manager; Screens and handles sensitive or complex inquiries; Uses substantial judgment and independent decision-making authority to assist with operations and maintains a high level of discretion in the handling of confidential matters; Strategizes and collaborates with the team to understand positions and priorities for donor and leadership interactions; May occasionally assist in staffing the CEO/EVP or other WMC executives at philanthropic events outside normal working hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Four (4) years of experience in development, donor relations, fundraising, event planning, project coordination, or related administrative support role.
  • Two (2) years of direct experience working with senior executives
  • Microsoft Office experience

  • Six (6) years of substantial knowledge and experience in higher education fundraising and/or large health systems or other large, complex organizations
  • Experience in a non-profit environment
  • Previous project coordination experience; experience with the Advancement System (TAS) or other CRM systems
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • High competency with data and reporting tools such as excel
