Job summary

Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Department / School of Engineering in Barcelona seeks a part-time Researcher to support the FORESEE project. The role focuses on scientific-technical activities, prototyping, and simulations under a 5-month horizon.

Applicants should have a BSc in Biomedical Engineering with experience in FEM/SPICE, MATLAB/C++, and data analysis. Collaboration with suppliers and pre-clinical study support are included.

Qualifications

  • BSc Biomedical Engineering degree required or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting research activities and project management.
  • Proficiency with finite element methods and SPICE simulations.
  • Strong data analysis skills and literature review experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prototyping and CAD design for FORESEE project components.
  • Develop computational simulations (FEM, SPICE) and analyze results.
  • Work with MATLAB, C++, and Python to support device development.
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers of implantable device parts.
  • Review materials from competitors and analyze applicable components.
  • Research manufacturing/industrialization aspects of implantable devices.
  • Identify potential market opportunities for the technology.
  • Prepare and participate in discussions with stakeholders about injectable tech.
  • Assist in pre-clinical study analyses, bench tests, and animal experiments.
  • Draft technical documentation.

Offer Description

The Biomedical Electronics Research Group (BERG) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a research team who has been awarded the European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition grant for the project FORESEE. The project is meant to develop and validate an innovative microsensing platform for remote monitoring of heart failure patients. The platform consists of a sensor embedded in an active implantable medical device and a portable external system to wirelessly power and communicate with it.

Tasks to be performed:

Scientific-technical activities and scientific-technical management related to the activities of the FORESEE project, including:

  • Prototyping: CAD design (Fusion 360/FreeCAD).
  • Development of computational simulations (finite element methods, SPICE) related to the project and analysis of results (e.g., Ansys fluid, COMSOL Multiphysics).
  • Use of MATLAB, C++ and Python.
  • Contact with suppliers and manufacturers of parts of implantable devices.
  • Search and analysis of devices made by competing companies, and tracking of components they use.
  • Research and analysis of technologies and methods used in implantable devices manufacturing and industrialization.
  • Research and analysis of other market opportunities where the technology could have an impact.
  • Preparation and participation in discussions with stakeholders about injectable technology.
  • Participation in analysis of pre-clinical studies, including bench testing and animal experiments.
  • Drafting of documentation.

The duration of these tasks is estimated over a period of 5 months.

Group and complement: Grup 3 + Nivell p-u based on experience and skills.

Dedication and working hours: Part time (15 h/week).

Planned remuneration approx: 13.265,34 –14.012,70 € gross per year based on your experience and skills (956,26 € - 1.018,57 € gross monthly).

Eligibility criteria

Selection criteria: The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:

1- Academic Training (0-30 points).

  • BSc. Biomedical Engineering

2- Other professional training and experience, adequacy to the proposed profile (0-50 points):

  • Experience in supporting research activities.
  • Experience on finite element method and SPICE simulations.
  • Experience in searching for materials and literature review.
  • Experience in data analysis obtained from pre-clinical studies.

3- Other merits (0-20 points):

  • Languages: English, Spanish (Catalan will be considered very positively)

The minimum score to pass the selection process is 85 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be offered the job.
