Job summary

WestRock Company in West Point, VA is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to plan, organize, develop, and execute capital projects within defined scope, budget, and schedule.

You will coordinate multiple disciplines, manage Management of Change tasks, and deliver projects that meet safety, technical, cost and schedule goals with a focus on continuous improvement and strong collaboration with operations, maintenance and engineering firms.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Structural/Civil Engineering required.
• 10+ years of experience in industrial manufacturing with pulp & paper experience preferred.
• Project management experience; PMP certification a plus but not required.
• Excellent trouble shooting skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
• Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Drafting and CAD (AutoCAD) training/experience.
• Experience in multiple mechanical areas (e.g., equipment sizing, rotating equipment, process instrumentation, design, structural analysis, machine design, fluid systems).

Responsibilities

• Perform Front End Planning and Detailed Design for capital projects to meet safety, technical, cost and schedule goals.
• Manage project procurement and vendor/contractor management.
• Define project requirements and provide technical assistance from design through commissioning.
• Inspect installations to ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, ASME, AISC, FM Global, and other codes.
• Adhere to corporate project standards and reporting timelines.
• Coordinate outside resources to support operational improvements.

Mechanical Project Engineer - West Point, VA

Career opportunity:

The Mechanical Project Engineer’s responsibility includes planning, organizing, developing, and executing capital engineering projects within constraints of specific project scope, budget and target schedule. The successful candidate will need experience in project management with technical skills to coordinate a variety of disciplines within the Engineering Department, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering Firms, Vendors and Contractors. The position also requires supporting and managing tasks associated with Management of Change projects for maintenance and operations.

Reporting Relationship: The Sr. Mechanical Project Engineer reports to the Engineering Group Leader.

How you will impact Smurfit WestRock:

• Perform and or manage all Front End Planning and Detailed Design engineering for capital project development with the objective of meeting safety, technical, cost and schedule goals
• Execute aspects of project procurement and vendor/contractor management
• Outlines project requirements and provide technical assistance on capital projects from design through completion and commissioning
• Inspect completed installations and ensure that all projects are installed per applicable regulatory codes (OSHA, ANSI, ASME, AISC, FM Global etc.)
• Comply with corporate project standards and reporting timelines
• Coordinate outside resources to assist with operational improvements

What you need to succeed:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Structural/Civil Engineering
• 10+ years of experience in industrial manufacturing with Pulp & Paper experience preferred but not required
• Project management experience, PMP Certification a plus but not required
• Excellent trouble shooting skills with a demonstrated continuous improvement mindset
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills such as building close working relationships and minimizing conflicts through collaboration and consensus building
• JDE Experience Preferred
• Drafting and CAD (AutoCAD) training/experience
• Experience in four or more of the following areas:
  • Sizing and selection of various mechanical equipment
  • Rotating equipment
  • Process instrumentation systems
  • Process design
  • Structural analysis
  • Mechanics
  • Machine Design
  • Fluid flow systems
• Support safety and environmental compliance.
