Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Project Engineer in Dallas, TX to coordinate planning and execution of engineering projects across operations, maintenance, I&E and safety. You will provide technical direction, develop engineered solutions, and manage capital and expense projects from inception to completion at the on-site mill.

You will lead teams, supervise contractors, maintain safety standards, and prepare drawings and reports to support the mill’s operating plan and goals.

Qualifications

  • BS Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering from accredited institution.
  • Strong leadership ability with high ethical standards and safety focus.
  • 1-3 years' heavy manufacturing experience; pulp & paper experience preferred.
  • Ability to forecast spending and manage projects within budget.
  • Ability to read/interpret blueprints and prepare reports.
  • Experience coordinating with operations, maintenance, and safety teams.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate planning, organizing, and completion of engineering projects at the Dallas mill.
  • Provide technical direction and engineered solutions to maintenance and operations.
  • Manage all project phases from inception through final execution within budget and schedule.
  • Supervise outside contractors and coordinate with mill teams on outages and repairs.

The Opportunity:

The Project Engineer at the Dallas, TX mill coordinates planning, organizing, and completion of engineering projects. You will work with mill personnel in operations, maintenance, I & E, and safety to develop projects and support the mill’s operating plan and goals. This includes providing technical direction, assistance, and engineered solutions to maintenance and operating personnel. Manages all phases of capital and expense projects from inception through final project. The Project Engineer will support all Mill goals such as safety, environmental, quality assurance, cost, and budgets. The Project Engineer will outline project requirements, coordinate tasks, and supervise progress to ensure that project objectives are met. This is an onsite position at the mill.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
  • Safety is the primary responsibility in every activity and project. The Project Engineer will orient personnel, frequently audit work to ensure everything is being executed safely, and work with operations/maintenance/safety departments as needed.
  • You will actively participate in mill safety programs such as STOP for safety and team of two.
  • Manage multiple capital and productivity projects, including planning, design, documenting, budgeting, and implementation.
  • Assist in the attainment of Mill goals by serving on teams or supplying teams with necessary technical support and responding to field questions.
  • Participate in the maintenance weekend call duty rotation.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. This will include working with the operating and maintenance personnel closely to determine needs.
  • Ability to assess situations based on facts and quickly react to provide timely and precise directions to employees involved. Assists with troubleshooting and fixing plant problems.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and summarize information and written materials including blueprints and equipment manuals. Ability to produce reports, business correspondence and documents.
  • Coordinates and supervises work of outside contractors on various sized projects.
  • Assist with planning and execution of machine maintenance outages on both a capital and regular maintenance/production capacity by supervising and providing technical assistance to team members and outside contractors.
  • The Project Engineer will manage projects to keep them safe, get quality results, keep cost within budget and maintain schedules.
  • Must be able to generate drawings, specifications, project execution plans, scope of work documents, estimates, schedules, and all instructions necessary to convey project requirements to others.
What you need to succeed:
  • BS Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering from accredited institution
  • Previous experience or knowledge of pumps and piping, power transmission, heat transferring equipment, structural steel, ergonomics, industrial control systems, and other pulp and paper processes will be beneficial. Military equivalents will be considered.
  • Strong leadership ability along with high ethical standards, with uncompromising focus on worker safety and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • 1 - 3 years' heavy manufacturing industry experience, with pulp & Paper industry experience preferred.
  • Solid ability to organize and plan, working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to forecast spending on projects and manage projects within budget.
  • Project Engineer must ensure documentation is in place on the projects to which he or she is assigned and make sure the information is communicated to operations and maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is essential.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a demanding work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and interact collaboratively as part of a team. Take an active role when working with a team.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to draw valid conclusions supported by facts and data.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
Specific Knowledge Preferred:
  • Paper Machine Maintenance Experience
  • Boiler Maintenance Experience
  • Ability with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Produce drawing using AutoCAD
  • Piping System Design
