The Reserve Deputy

Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for multiple part-time Enforcement Reserve Deputy positions and is creating an eligibility list for rotating shifts. Enforcement Reserve Deputies work a minimum of 20 hours per month with other law enforcement personnel in the protection of life and property as guided by federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

Enforcement Reserve Deputies supplement and assist regular sworn deputies in their duties and therefore work varied 8, 10, or 12-hour shifts in support of regular shifts, special events, holidays, and weekends. They may work in various special assignments as required.

Reserve Deputies working in regular assignments (e.g., Rural patrol, Contract City patrol, etc.) are unpaid (volunteer) sworn positions. Reserve Deputies working in grant-funded assignments (e.g., Marine, Woods, special events, etc.) are paid (hourly) sworn positions.

This position is not represented and is non-benefitted.

RESERVE ACADEMY REQUIREMENT

Successful candidates who have no certified or reserve law enforcement experience in Oregon will be required to attend and graduate the Mid-Valley Reserve Training Academy. Classes are tentatively scheduled to be held twice a week in the evenings during the week and on Saturdays from January - June 2027.

Reserve Training Academy may be waived for successful candidates who are retired Oregon law enforcement or who have successfully completed an approved Reserve Training Academy with another agency in Oregon. Any such determination will be made upon review of training records after hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The Qualifications
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by conclusion of reserve academy (June 2027).
  • A high school diploma/GED is required.
  • Must possess:
    • United States citizenship or have the ability to obtain citizenship within one (1) year of hire;
    • an unrestricted state-issued driver’s license with the ability to obtain an Oregon driver’s license as this position will be required to drive a County vehicle;
    • a good driving record; and
    • a satisfactory work record and personal history (e.g., free of criminal convictions, although special circumstances may be considered).
  • Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid driver’s license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in ORS 806.070.

Additional preference may be given to those applicants that are fluent in English and Spanish.

Will be subject to successful completion of a personal background check including, but not limited to, criminal, civil, driving, military, educational, and employment history pursuant to OAR 259-008-0015.

Applicants will be required to pass a medical exam and/or psychological evaluation prior to appointment in order to meet standard under OAR 259-008-0010.

This position requires a commitment of a minimum of 20 hours of scheduled duty service per month.

The incumbent typically performs shift-work with periodic change in shifts; working alone in isolated geographic areas in all types of weather and conditions, and often in confined spaces. The noise level in the work environment varies depending on the situation. Work involves stress of working with detained individuals. The incumbent will likely encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day.

The employee is regularly required to possess the strength and stamina to sit for long periods of time in a patrol vehicle and to enter and exit the vehicle quickly and frequently; and to possess the strength, stamina, coordination, and balance to stand and walk for long periods; to walk and run on uneven surfaces; to bend and reach to conduct inspections/investigations; to climb ladders, fences, and other obstacles; to run in pursuit of individuals; to physically restrain uncooperative and violent individuals, and to carry equipment and supplies.

Must be able to meet all requirements as designated in the job task analysis of a police officer on file with DPSST.
