Job summary

Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for the Director of the Energy Storage Research Alliance (ESRA), a DOE-BES hub. Lead a multi-partner R&D center focused on next-generation battery materials and chemistries, with AI, ML, and autonomous labs to accelerate discovery.

You will shape a strategic vision, grow external partnerships, and ensure safety, integrity, and impact across a matrixed organization.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science with at least 15 years of leadership experience.
• Internationally recognized research stature in electrochemistry or energy storage.
• Proven ability to secure external funding, including DOE-BES programs.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience managing large, matrixed teams and partnerships.

Responsibilities

• Provide visionary leadership to define and advance ESRA’s scientific strategy and research priorities in energy storage and related fields.
• Lead development of ambitious research agendas leveraging ESRA’s strengths and national user facilities.
• Foster interdisciplinary collaborations across academia, industry, and government to accelerate deployment.
• Oversee operations, staffing, budget, and performance evaluation.
• Advocate for ESRA’s science to sponsors, stakeholders, and the scientific community.
