Job summary

A national law firm seeks an Energy Regulatory Associate to join its regulatory and energy transactions practice. The attorney will work with utilities, energy companies, developers, and other industry participants on sophisticated transactional and regulatory matters involving electric generation, transmission, interconnection, and large-load projects.

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the role focuses on advising on transactional and regulatory matters, drafting PPAs and interconnection

Qualifications

  • J.D. from ABA-accredited law school.
  • 4–6 years in energy transactions/regulation.
  • Experience with PPAs, interconnection, large-load matters.
  • Bar admission in MN/AZ/UT or eligibility.
  • Strong academics and excellent research/writing.

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on energy-sector transactional and regulatory matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements).
  • Handle Interconnection Agreements involving generation, transmission, and load.
  • Assist with Large Load matters and electric service arrangements.
  • Draft and negotiate electric service agreements and related contracts.
  • Advise on transmission service matters and industry-specific transactions.
  • Research and analyze federal and state energy regulations.
  • Assist with matters involving FERC and state utility regulators.
  • Collaborate with attorneys across regulatory and transactional practices.
  • Communicate with clients regarding legal and regulatory issues.

Job description

Responsibilities:
  • Advise clients on energy-sector transactional and regulatory matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
  • Handle Interconnection Agreements involving generation, transmission, and load.
  • Assist with Large Load matters and electric service arrangements.
  • Draft and negotiate electric service agreements and related commercial contracts.
  • Advise clients on transmission service matters and industry-specific transactions.
  • Research and analyze federal and state energy regulations.
  • Assist with matters involving FERC and state utility regulators.
  • Collaborate with attorneys across regulatory and transactional practices.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding legal and regulatory issues.
Qualifications:
  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • 4–6 years of experience in energy transactions, energy regulation, or a closely related practice.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
    • Power Purchase Agreements
    • Interconnection Agreements
    • Large Load matters
    • Electric service agreements
    • Transmission service matters
    • Energy-industry transactions
  • Admission to the Minnesota, Arizona, or Utah bar, or eligibility to obtain admission.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters in a sophisticated legal environment.
