SMT Energy is a well-capitalized U.S. energy infrastructure company specializing in the development, ownership and operation of battery energy storage systems. SMT develops distributed-generation and utility-scale projects that improve grid reliability, support growing electricity demand and create lasting value for investors and local communities.
SMT is seeking an Energy Analyst to join its commercial team and support the optimization, market analysis, and commercial management of its operating and development-stage energy storage portfolio. The role will have significant exposure to ERCOT, SPP, PJM and MISO power markets, asset operations, investment analysis, and commercial strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Assume commercial P&L responsibility for the operating BESS fleet, including revenue performance, budget/forecast tracking, variance analysis, and identification of opportunities to improve portfolio profitability
- Support market intelligence, fundamental analysis, modeling, and commercial strategy for operating and development-stage energy storage assets
- Perform supply/demand, generation, load, fuel, renewable penetration, and market-price analysis to develop forward market views
- Analyze nodal pricing, congestion, transmission constraints, and basis risk across target markets
- Support development and evaluation of bidding, dispatch, and optimization strategies for operating BESS assets
- Monitor Day-Ahead and Real-Time Energy and Ancillary Service markets and assess asset performance relative to commercial objectives
- Develop analytics to evaluate revenue opportunities, operational risks, and asset performance
- Monitor ISO/RTO regulatory developments, market-design changes, and tariff initiatives that could impact portfolio economics
- Support commercial due diligence and market analysis for acquisitions, development opportunities, and other investment decisions
- Assist with financial and scenario analysis supporting new investment opportunities
- Coordinate with third-party QSEs, optimizers, O&M providers, and other service providers involved in real-time asset operations
- Track operating results and develop internal reporting on revenue, dispatch performance, market conditions, and key commercial drivers
- Support investor, lender, and management reporting related to commercial performance and market outlook
- Help develop tools, dashboards, and processes that improve commercial decision-making across the portfolio
Key Qualifications
- B.S. in Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Data Science, or a related quantitative field preferred
- 2+ years of experience in power markets, energy trading, asset optimization, market analytics, or a related field preferred
- Experience with ERCOT and/or SPP energy and Ancillary Service markets strongly preferred; experience in other ISO/RTO markets is a plus
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to translate market data into actionable commercial conclusions and execution of commercial strategy
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling, scenario analysis, and large-data-set analysis
- Strong PowerPoint and presentation-development skills
- Experience with SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or similar analytical tools is a plus
- Understanding of nodal power markets, congestion, transmission, generation economics, and/or battery storage economics is a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented with the ability to develop and defend an independent market view
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and execute effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working in a small, entrepreneurial organization with significant individual responsibility
- Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership and a "run with it" mentality
Compensation and Location
- Salary: Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
- Bonus: Annual performance bonus based on individual performance and the overall success of the company.
- Location: Dallas, Texas preferred or remote with a preference for candidates able to work in a hybrid capacity and travel periodically to Dallas or project locations as needed.
