Job description

The Endoscopy Technician (ET) functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and performs delegated functions such as planning, preparing and setting up for endoscopy cases. The Endoscopy Tech performs in an assistive role during endoscopy procedures and is expected to anticipate the needs of the physician within the scope of their practice. The Endoscopy Technician (ET) performs direct patient care tasks such as phlebotomy, and unit functions appropriate to the position and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. The ET is responsible for assisting in the management of supplies and equipment in the department. The ET may collect, report and document data and keeps the RN informed of pertinent changes. The ET participates in orientation of new personnel as appropriate. Prepares for endoscopy procedures; transports patient as requested; anticipates procedure/patient needs; and assists in timely setup/turnover. Performs any ancillary testing and other duties including but not limited to: drawing blood, setting up oxygen, measuring I&O, performing point of care testing, obtaining height and weight, and vital signs effectively communicates to the RN the patient responses to care provided in an accurate and timely manner. Assists on assigned procedures; performs post procedure tasks and timely case breakdown, appropriate scope and equipment management and room/department cleanup efficiently. Decontaminates and processes endoscopy equipment and adheres to standards and policies around decontaminating and tracking endoscopes used in procedures. Assures that staff and patient safety parameters are consistently met. Continually and proactively seeks learning opportunities and situations to advance career skills to promote higher performance level. Demonstrates responsibility for own competency and mandatory education and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up-to-date. Prepares for the performance evaluation conference by submitting completed skills list and education attendance documents one month prior to due date. Meets educational requirements for new equipment materials, procedures and technology. Adheres to and consistently supports professional standards and health care regulations that provide for and promote safety and high quality patient care in Perioperative Services. Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining knowledge base of current unit and hospital-based communication through a variety of modalities including but not limited to communication books, notices posted within the hospital and department, meeting minutes, Jackson Hospital intranet, and JH email system.

High School diploma or equivalent. Training as a surgical technologist is preferred. Prefer previous work experience in job related position such as medical assisting, nursing assistant, and previous endoscopy experience preferred. Nurse Aide certification or certification from acceptable hospital program. Must pass NST phlebotomy test. Certification as an endoscopy technician preferred. BLS certification required. Excellent verbal and customer-focused skills required. Ability to interact effectively with the public, physicians, and hospital staff. Proficiency with endoscopy procedures and NST tasks. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to assist in lifting, turning, pushing, pulling and ambulating patients, and moving equipment involving a minimum of 50 pounds. Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing, visual and hearing acuity necessary for patient care. Frequent prolonged periods of standing and walking. Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate patient care equipment. Ability to meet the attendance requirements of the job.
