Job summary

MedStar Health is seeking an Endoscopy OR Support Technician to assist GI specialists during endoscopy procedures. The role requires readiness of instrumentation, proper equipment preparation, and patient monitoring to ensure smooth operations in the OR.

You will handle specimen preparation, label medications on the field, participate in time-out procedures, and help with room turnover and environmental services as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
• 1–2 years experience in an endoscopy environment.
• CPR certification required within 90 days.
• Certification requirements may vary by department.

Responsibilities

• Assists GI Specialist during endoscopy procedures.
• Anticipates needs by having instrumentation and supplies ready.
• Prepares and inspects equipment to prevent delays.
• Assists with patient monitoring for tolerance of procedures and notifies team of changes.
• Handles specimen retrieval and preparation per protocols.
• Labels medications on the field according to protocols.
• Participates in universal time-out process during procedures.
• Restocks OR and assists with room turnover with minimal supervision.
• Supports environmental services such as linen handling and waste removal.
• Transports equipment and supplies as needed.
• Assists with patient transfer/ positioning as directed.
• Logs and returns endoscopes to decontamination after procedures.
• Maintains stretcher/bed availability in the OR.
• Reports malfunctions and tags equipment needing repair.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

About the Job

Provide support to physicians and nurses while the procedure is underway, handle specimens collected and sterilize equipment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Supports and assists the Gastroenterology Specialist with the performance of diagnostic and or therapeutic endoscopy procedures.
• Anticipates the needs of the Gastroenterology Specialist during procedure by having all instrumentation and supplies ready prior to use.
• Inspects and prepares equipment instruments and supplies prior to scheduled case ensuring no delay in procedure.
• Assists in patient monitoring for tolerance of procedure and alerts physician and RN of any change in status.
• Assists with specimen retrieval and preparation in accordance with established protocols.
• Labels all medications on the field in accordance with established protocols.
• Participates in the process of universal time out during procedure.
• Assists team members promptly with room turn-over and clean up with minimal supervision.
• Assists with environmental services support such as linen management, trash removal and cleaning of equipment.
• Assists with transport of equipment and supplies as appropriate.
• Assists with the transfer and positioning of patients as directed by GI Specialist, Licensed Anesthesia Care Provider and/or RN on and off the OR table, stretcher, bed etc.
• Used endoscopes are properly logged and labeled and returned to decontamination area as soon as procedure ends.
• Maintains stretcher and/or bed availability for patients in the operating room at all times.
• Saves all used supply wrappers for charge purposes.
• Reports to Director of the Operating Room seeking additional responsibility when assignments are completed.
• Assists in restocking Operating Rooms throughout the workday and prior to the end of the shift in accordance with PAR levels.
• Reports malfunction of endoscopy equipment/instrumentation to Materials Coordinator immediately upon completion of a procedure.
• Tags and removes malfunctioning equipment in need of repair from use.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Associate's degree in surgical technology preferred

Experience

• 1-2 years experience in an endoscopy environment with technical skills and knowledge necessary to function in the Operating Room environment with endoscopy equipment.

Licenses and Certifications

• CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
• Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
