Job summary

Zipline seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to own subsystems of the droid end-to-end, from concept through production ramp. You will define requirements, prototype, and validate designs that meet cost and reliability targets while staying tightly integrated with electrical and firmware teams.

You’ll work with industrial designers to translate concepts into manufacturable products, using Siemens NX for CAD and applying FEA, GD&T, and prototyping skills.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or related field.
• Own at least one complex subassembly or full product end-to-end.
• Experience collaborating with industrial designers on consumer-visible products.
• CAD fluency with Siemens NX; Creo/SolidWorks/CATIA acceptable.
• Strong fundamentals: hand calcs, FEA, GD&T, tolerance analysis.
• Knowledge of manufacturing methods: injection molding, composites, stamping, CNC.
• Hands-on prototyping in machine shop, 3D printing, first articles.
• Judgment to know when to iterate vs freeze based on requirements.

Responsibilities

• Own subsystems end-to-end: architecture, design, prototyping, validation, tooling, ramp.
• Translate ID intent into engineered product with manufacturability in mind.
• Define and negotiate subsystem requirements with systems engineering and hardware leads.
• Design in CAD (Siemens NX) and iterate architectures quickly.
• Use hand calcs, FEA, and prototyping to size parts and options.
• Design test fixtures and assembly aids for rate production.
• Manage parts, assemblies, and BOMs through release and changes.
• Collaborate with electrical, firmware, thermal, and manufacturing engineers.
• Travel to suppliers/manufacturers to qualify processes and support ramps.
