Job description

Day Camp Christmas, located 30 minutes west of Minneapolis in Mound, MN, is seeking day camp counselors to support summer sessions from late July through August 31st. Applicants must be at least 16 years old. The camp operates Monday through Friday from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM.

Job Summary:

The Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, coordinating, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in small groups. They will ensure the safety, development, growth, and skill achievement of participants, providing high-quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences aligned with YMCA core values of caring, equity, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assist in supervising and organizing campers to meet desired outcomes, applying social-emotional learning and youth development principles, ensuring proper supervision, and adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Develop and implement engaging program activities, leading or assisting with various activities such as crafts, nature, songs, games, swimming, archery, canoeing, and Family Night.
  • Maintain health and mental health standards, providing daily care, responding to emergencies, managing camper behavior, and ensuring medication administration as directed.
  • Uphold safety standards, maintain accurate records, understand emergency procedures, and supervise transportation and field trips.
  • Serve as a role model, demonstrating positive attitude and behavior, maintaining cleanliness and organization, and exemplifying YMCA values.
  • Represent the camp professionally when interacting with families, volunteers, and community members, providing feedback and guidance to junior staff.
Relationships:

This role reports to the Program Director and interacts with camp staff, campers, volunteers, and families, emphasizing diversity and inclusive engagement.

Qualifications:
  • First Aid & CPR/AED certification (can be obtained upon hire).
  • Experience or education in camp, youth programs, recreation, or related fields.
  • Ability to lead activities for all age groups, work independently and in teams, and possess strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
Work Conditions:
  • Physical ability to participate in outdoor activities, lift up to 50 pounds, and navigate varied terrain.
  • Work in dusty, outdoor environments, and support activities involving various physical movements and environmental conditions.
Additional Notes:

This description covers major duties but is not exhaustive. The incumbent will follow directions from the Program Director and contribute to the camp's success.
