Responsibilities

  • Personal safety of self and others while performing tasks.
  • Record inspection or test data and compute results for reports.
  • Collect samples from production lines per schedule for testing.
  • Read dials and meters to verify equipment is functioning correctly.

Position Overview

The Lab Technician position is responsible for the sample collection and testing, and data recording activities for finished goods and raw materials to ensure customer requirements are met. The role works closely with Process Leads and Process Operators to communicate issues and aids in resolving issues.

Job Responsibilities
  • Ensure products meet quality specifications prior receiving and/or shipment.
  • In process quality check and balance to ensure product meets key point specifications.
  • Properly maintain lab equipment.
  • Work overtime to cover vacancies/vacations and meet customer requirements, including weekends.
  • Personal safety of self and others while conducting work tasks.
  • Cross train to other processes and positions for business continuity and flexibility.
  • Notify supervisors and other personnel of production problems, and assist in identifying and correcting these problems.
  • Record inspection or test data, such as weights, temperatures, grades, or moisture content, and quantities inspected or graded.
  • Analyze test data and make computations as necessary to determine test results.
  • Collect samples from tanks per production schedule for testing.
  • Read dials and meters to verify that equipment is functioning at specified levels.
  • Clean, maintain, repair, and calibrate measuring instruments and test equipment.
  • Compute defect percentages or averages, using formulas and calculators, and prepare reports of inspection or test findings.
  • Attend all plant meetings and complete all trainings on time.
  • Maintain 5S standards.
  • Ability to occasionally push, pull and carry up to 50 pounds.
Safety

Adhere to all plant safety policies and compliance regulations. Actively participate in the safety process through completing safety audits, participating in safety projects, identifying site hazards and contributing to safety improvements, and being an attending member of a safety team. Complete annual safety training as required.

Quality

Become familiar with, understand and comply with Milliken Quality Policy, Standard Operating Procedure(s) (SOPs), relevant ISO 9000 standards and Company Policies that are applicable to this position.

Responsible Care
  • Be aware of the relevant requirements of the Responsible Care Management System (RC-14001) and follow plant procedures to ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Understand the RC-14001 significant aspects of your job and help ensure controls are in place to reduce or eliminate negative impacts.
  • Take actions and identify and communicate ideas to minimize waste, prevent pollution and conserve energy.
Hazardous Waste Handling

All associates who handle hazardous waste shall be given an overview of regulations and company policies regarding the management of hazardous waste. Detailed instruction on handling, collecting, labeling, and transporting hazardous waste as outlined in RCRA and OSHA regulations will be provided. Appropriate notification procedures for spills and spill response will be instructed. Educational requirements include the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Environmental, Health, Safety & Security Responsibilities
  • Understand the relevant requirements of the Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) and RC-14001 certification.
  • Understand the importance of compliance with the Environmental, Safety and Responsible Care Policies, procedures, and the requirements of the RCMS.
  • Understand the significant environmental impacts associated with work activities and help ensure controls are in place to reduce or eliminate negative impacts.
  • Understand the potential consequences of deviation from specified operating procedures.
  • Immediately report any accidents and releases per the company escalation protocol.
  • Comply with all environmental, health, safety, and security rules; Environmental, Safety, and Responsible Care policies and programs established by the company to the extent of training received.
  • Recognize that adhering to job responsibilities and procedures regarding environmental, safety, security, and health is a condition of employment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the plant environmental, health, safety, security, and Responsible Care performance and programs.
Qualifications – Required

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) with coursework completed in general chemistry.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience in a laboratory environment preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft software applications helpful. Keyboarding proficiency and general computer knowledge/experience preferred.
