Job Role Summary

The EMT Trainee actively participates in the EMT-Basic course to become a certified EMT-Basic provider and completes exams to become both a state of Indiana and nationally certified EMT-Basic provider. Once the course and exams are successfully completed, the EMT Trainee is eligible for an EMT position.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Actively participates in EMT-Basic course, completes course assignments and passes quizzes and tests.
  2. Proactively identifies self-study opportunities and engages instructor as needed for optimal performance.
  3. Successfully completes the practical exam for becoming a certified EMT-Basic provider within 2 weeks following the completion of the course work.
  4. Successfully completes the National Registry of EMT Basic examination to become a certified EMT-Basic provider within 2 weeks following the completion of the practical exam.
  5. Under the supervision of instructors, Field Training Officers, or other designated personnel, the following job functions will be completed:
  6. Provides emergency medical care at the basic life support level according to Indianapolis EMS practices and policies, established protocols, verbal and written orders, and state regulations.
  7. Monitors patients while in transport and continues treatment initiated on the scene.
  8. Drives an emergency vehicle under emergent and non-emergent conditions.
  9. Performs patient assessments and initiates appropriate treatment.
  10. Maintains ambulance in operable conditions, which includes cleanliness, orderliness, and prompt restocking of equipment and supplies; determines vehicle readiness by checking fuel, lights, tires, and start/stop capabilities.
  11. Maintains communication and medical equipment in the field and reports defects for repair or replacement.
  12. Responds to runs from dispatcher.
  13. Coordinates with healthcare facilities regarding patients' vital statistics.
  14. Completes patient care reports and other documentation.
  15. Provides age-appropriate care (i.e. neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric) and reassures patients and bystanders by working in a confident and efficient manner.
  16. Coordinates public safety personnel in emergency situations.
Associated Job Duties
  1. Under the supervision of instructors, Field Training Officers or other designated personnel, the following job functions will be completed:
  2. Performs approved intervention and assists the paramedic as indicated.
  3. Reports verbally and physically observations and emergency care rendered to the patient at the scene and en route to the receiving staff for record keeping and diagnostics purposes. Upon request, provides assistance to the receiving facility staff.
  4. Disposes of contaminated supplies in accordance with established guidelines, decontaminates the vehicle interior and reusable goods.
  5. Manages trauma patients.
  6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  2. Six months work experience in any setting.
  3. Valid Indiana Driver’s License - must meet and remain in compliance with IEMS driver eligibility policy.

  9. Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions.

Responsibility

Judgment
  1. Incumbent may work under close supervision following established routines or assigned work with limited employee latitude.
Contacts - Internal/External
  1. Regular contact with instructors, FTOs, clinicians, physicians and medical staff, police and fire departments to provide and obtain information and instructions.
  2. Regular contact with general public to provide care.
Special Effort Required
  1. Lift up to 125 lbs. equally distributed and up to 250 lbs. with assistance.
  2. Heavy lifting for sustained periods; heavy and awkward lifting of patients and/or equipment over difficult terrain for several yards; intense strain for short periods of time.
  3. Normal use of limbs, eyes, ears and voice required to treat patients and to operate sophisticated electronic devices.
  4. Drive an emergency vehicle under emergency conditions and non-emergent conditions.
  5. Carry a stair chair 30 yards, up two flights of stairs, then down two flights of stairs with a patient attached.
  6. Carry tech box, oxygen equipment bag and ECG monitor up two flights of stairs.
  7. Kneel, stoop, bend, crawl, walk and crouch for extended periods of time, on uneven surfaces and confined spaces, including kneeling long enough to perform two hundred chest compressions in 2 minutes.
Working Environment
  1. Classroom environment.
  2. Stressful emergency situations.
  3. Works in both a well-lit and properly equipped ambulance and in inadequately lit spaces with no backup equipment or personnel.
  4. Environments involving crowds, noise, and confusion in all temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  5. Daily involvement with hazardous working conditions, chance of serious injury or loss of life.
