Job summary

Summary
  • As an Emergency Medical Technician, you will provide immediate pre-hospital care and transportation to patients experiencing medical emergencies. You will work closely with other EMTs, paramedics, and healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care in accordance with state and local protocols.
Essential Duties
  • Respond promptly and safely to emergency calls as directed by the dispatcher, providing efficient and effective care to patients at the scene and en route to healthcare facilities.
  • Conduct initial patient assessments to determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and establish priority for emergency care.
  • Administer BLS procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillation (AED), airway management, bleeding control, and splinting.
  • Provide emergency medical care to patients following established protocols, including administering oxygen, assisting with emergency childbirth, and managing traumatic injuries.
  • Safely transport patients to medical facilities, monitoring their condition and providing care during transit.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, other emergency response teams, and receiving medical facilities to ensure seamless patient care and coordination.
  • Complete accurate and timely patient care reports, including assessments, treatment provided, and patient responses.
  • Inspect and maintain ambulance and medical equipment, ensuring it is clean, functional, and properly stocked.
  • Adhere to all EMS protocols, state and federal regulations, and company policies and procedures.
  • Interact professionally with patients, families, and other members of the public, providing a high level of customer service and support.
  • Promotes a positive attitude towards their job and promotes positive teamwork with peers.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure.
Responsibilities
Required Experience
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds
  • Must be able to perform job duties in all weather conditions and at any time of day or night.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience as an EMT preferred
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
Required Education/Licensure
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid EMT certification by the Illinois Department of Public Health
  • As of 9/22/2025, staff must obtain a valid Illinois Class C drivers license within 30 days of this date or of hire
  • 18 years of age to meet insurability in Riversides vehicle insurance program
  • Must provide proof of a valid driving record to meet insurability in Riversides vehicle insurance program
  • Valid BLS certification

Exposure/Sensory Requirements:

  • Exposure to:
    • Chemicals: Auto soaps and waxes, Armourall (tires), window cleaners (ammonia), bleach, floor cleaners, strippers and wax, alcohol.
    • Video Display Terminals: None
    • Blood and Body Fluids: EMT positions are exposed through patient care of traumatically injured patients, initiating IV therapy, endotracheal intubation, transfer of incontinent patients, and removal of deceased patients.
    • TB or Airborne Pathogens: Possible exposure to undiagnosed patients during field care and transportation.

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):

  • Speech: Ability to communicate clearly and accurately with patient and over communication devices.
  • Vision: Correctable to 20/20 for driving and patient assessment, reading monitors, and checking blood pressure.
  • Smell: Assess odors on patient's airway, vapors or fumes at scene.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear lung and heart sounds, radio communications, and the patient's voice.
  • Touch: Good sensation to assess pulse qualities, skin temperatures, an moisture. Manipulate patient care equipment.

Cot and supplies to patient-arms length to 20 minutes. Patients, cot and supplies to ambulance-arms length to 20 minutes often over 200 lbs. Lift cot and patient into ambulance from ground level to waist height, lasting 30 seconds. Move patient from ED to cot to bed from knee to waist level and back. Carry patients up and down stairs-knee level to over head. Carry patient's belonging to ambulance and into house-arms length for several minutes).
