At Houston Methodist, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic position is responsible for assisting in the delivery of patient care and services to a diverse patient population and their families. This includes performing EKGs, collecting lab specimens under the direction of a licensed nurse and/or provider, and performing patient care activities within the unit-specific scope. The EMT/Paramedic demonstrates knowledge and skills to communicate effectively, carry out delegated tasks, conduct hourly patient rounds, and document data according to policy and procedure. The role practices Patient and Family Centered Care in line with Houston Methodist Experience standards.

People Essential Functions
  1. Function as a team member, responding positively to colleagues' needs, promoting a positive work environment, and managing multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  2. Serve as a role model and mentor for new EMTs and ancillary personnel, and lead in patient decontamination operations.
  3. Interact with peers, staff, and physicians respectfully, encouraging open communication and collaboration, and report pertinent patient care information clearly and timely.
  4. Act as an educational resource for unit competencies and validation procedures.
  5. Contribute to improving department scores for employee engagement and peer-to-peer accountability.
Service Essential Functions
  1. Provide direct patient care under RN supervision, document care and observations, and respond to patient needs promptly.
  2. Perform hourly rounds to meet patient needs, report changes to the nurse, and respond to call lights.
  3. Enhance patient satisfaction through effective communication and teamwork.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
  1. Use assessment skills to identify patient severity, deterioration, and risks, and communicate findings appropriately.
  2. Manage incoming patient information and ensure patient privacy and safety.
  3. Report near misses and errors, support safety initiatives, and participate in quality improvement activities.
Finance Essential Functions
  1. Use resources efficiently, assist with staffing needs, and manage time effectively.
  2. Maintain an organized environment and assist in inventory management.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
  1. Seek opportunities for learning and skill improvement.
  2. Participate in performance improvement projects and shared governance activities.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of EMT-A, EMT-Paramedic program, or licensed Paramedic, or currently participating in an EMT to Paramedic program.
  • Six months pre-hospital or hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic.
  • Licenses and certifications including: LP, EMT-A, EMT-P, BLS, ACLS, PALS (within 3 months), NVCRISIS (within 3 months).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in job-specific skills, communication, judgment, and time management.
  • Ability to access hospital information systems and perform basic EKG interpretation.
Additional Information
  • Work attire includes scrubs and department-approved clothing.
  • No on-call requirement specified.
  • Travel within the Houston area is not required.
