Pueblo of Zuni seeks an EMT-Basic/Firefighter for the Zuni Fire/EMS Program. The role provides basic emergency medical care and transportation in both fire and medical emergencies, under supervision of shift leadership.
Requirements include EMT-Basic certification, NM driver’s license, and hazardous materials awareness. Position involves on-call shifts and fire ground duties in a tribal community setting.

GENERAL DEFINITION : The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform emergency and non-emergency situations to administer basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a ranked shift supervisor, with indirect supervision from the Captain or Chief.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED : No supervisory duties.
DUTIES :
Administer first aid treatment or basic life support care.
Participates in EMS and Fire related in-service training and demonstrations.
Performs routine maintenance (not requiring a mechanic) on emergency vehicles.
Maintains duty station work areas and living quarters in a clean and orderly manner.
Basic Structural firefighting awareness and techniques .
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services. Ability to administer first aid treatment or basic level life support care. Knowledge of medical terminology. Good knowledge of principles and practices used in modern structural fire suppression and rescue work. Knowledge of safe methods for lifting, moving, and transporting injured persons. Skilled in identifying and dealing with emergencies. Ability to keep composure under stressful situations. Minimal knowledge in the use variety of power tools and equipment kept on all apparatuses. Good knowledge of community residents and the Pueblo of Zuni master street address guides and rural addressing systems. Basic knowledge of the Police Ten Codes. Ability to follow verbal & written instructions, as well as read and write narrative reports. Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 and HIPAA Regulations. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to lift heavy objects. Ability to use a two-way radio system. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, Tribal employees, medical staff at emergency facilities, and the general public.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent with at least (1) year of work experience in emergency medical services.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License with not DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Performs strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions. Requires arduous physical exertion under unusual circumstances. There will be some standing and/or walking for long periods of time. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in various situations. Requires frequent lifting of up to 150 lbs. Work is generally performed in indoor and outdoor settings in emergencies and extremely stressful situations. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, smoke, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood borne pathogens, hazardous material and infectious disease. Situations occur where surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, firefighting bunker gear and SCBA equipment are needed. High degree of self-control in high stress situations. Must be in very good physical condition.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. The position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo and successfully pass a thorough background check including FBI Fingerprint check. Will be required to pass an annual medical examination. Will be required to work shifts, weekends, on-call duty and Holidays. Requires compliance with the Pueblo of Zuni Drug Free Workplace Policy. Must be insurable.
