Job summary

UMass Memorial Health seeks a certified Emergency Medical Technician to provide skilled pre-hospital care in a high-demand environment. Responsibilities include on-scene patient assessment, life support, and rapid decision-making across diverse EMS calls.

The role includes shifts that cover days and nights with 12-hour blocks and weekend work. A signing bonus may be available; compliance with licensing and ongoing credentialing is required within Massachusetts EMS guidelines.

Qualifications

• Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
• CPR - Basic Rescue certification by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
• Valid driver license.
• Experience in accident scene management and stress handling; strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Preferred: 1 year of urban EMS experience with municipal first response.

Responsibilities

• Administers emergency medical care at the scene per Massachusetts EMS Pre-Hospital Treatment protocols.
• Obtains medical history and checks vital signs; informs on-call physician of diagnostic indicators; performs definitive life support.
• Responds to a wide range of emergency situations; provides control at the scene; triages and transports at mass casualty incidents.

I. Major Responsibilities

• Administers skilled medical care to individuals in response to calls for emergency treatment in accordance with the Massachusetts EMS Pre-Hospital Treatment protocols. Examines, assesses, and stabilizes patients at emergency scene, i.e., hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, immobilization of fractures, bandaging, proper treatment for burns, poisoning, or drug overdose, manages gynecological emergencies, delivers newborn, manages mentally disturbed patient, etc.
• Obtains medical history. Checks vital signs. Advises/informs on-call physician of diagnostic indication. Performs definitive life support.
• Responds to a wide range of emergency situations as required.
• Provides control at the scene of medical emergency. Conducts triage, treatment and transportation at mass casualty incidents including incidents involving terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
• Documents pre-hospital care received by patients in order to facilitate admission to health care facility and for database purposes.

II. Position Qualifications

License/Certification/Education

• Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
• Certified in CPR - Basic Rescue by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
• Valid driver license.

Experience/Skills

• Required: Experienced in accident scene management and control.
• Required: Demonstrated ability to work well under often stressful situations.
• Required: Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Required: Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Preferred: Minimum one year of experience in an urban EMS service integrated with a municipal first response system.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
