Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is hiring an Emergency Medical Technician to respond to emergency calls, assess patients, and provide stabilization and transport in line with Massachusetts EMS protocols.

The role requires MA DPH EMT certification, CPR certification, and a valid driver's license; strong communication, organization, and resilience under pressure are essential. Work includes day and night shifts in a fast-paced pre-hospital setting with a dedicated team of EMS professionals.

Qualifications

• Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
• CPR Basic Rescue certification required (by ARC or AHA).
• Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Administers skilled medical care to emergency calls according to Massachusetts EMS Pre-Hospital Treatment protocols.
• Examines, assesses, and stabilizes patients at the scene and during transport to the appropriate facility entry point.
• Obtains medical history and vital signs; informs on-call physician of diagnostic indications; performs definitive life support.
• Demonstrates ability to respond to a wide range of emergency situations and provides control at the scene of medical emergencies.

Major Responsibilities:1. Administers skilled medical care to individuals in response to calls for emergency treatment in accordance with the Massachusetts EMS Pre-Hospital Treatment protocols. Examines, assesses, and stabilizes patients at emergency scene, i.e., hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, immobilization of fractures, bandaging, proper treatment for burns, poisoning, or drug overdose, manages gynecological emergencies, delivers newborn, manages mentally disturbed patient, etc.2. Obtains medical history. Checks vital signs. Advises/informs on-call physician of diagnostic indication. Performs definitive life support.3. Responds to a wide range of emergency situations as required.4. Provides control at the scene of medical emergency. Conducts triage, treatment and transportation at mass casualty incidents including incidents involving terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.5. Documents pre-hospital care received by patients in order to facilitate admission to health care facility and for database purposes.Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:1. Experienced in accident scene management and control.2. Demonstrated ability to work well under often stressful situations.3. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.4. Effective oral and written communication skills.Preferred:1. Minimum one year of experience in an urban EMS service integrated with a municipal first response system.Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.
