Job summary

Independence Health System is seeking an EMT-B for emergency medical transport and pre-hospital care. You will provide BLS-level care, operate ambulances, document patient information, and coordinate with hospital staff and EMS teams.

The role requires EMT-B certification, EVOC, and a current PA driver’s license. Candidates should be able to work rotating shifts and travel between Independence Health System locations as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education.
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking.
  • EMT-B certification and PA EVOC required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
  • PA Driver's License required (out-of-state hires must obtain PA license within 30 days).
  • Act 33/34 clearances and Act 73 FBI clearance with renewal.

Job Summary

Provides basic life support and emergency pre-hospital care to persons in emergency situations. Provides patient care and transportation. Completes timely transports of patients. Operates emergency vehicles.

Essential Job Functions
  • Scheduled to work rotating shifts as needed.
  • Provides BLS patient care in accordance with the approved standing orders and protocols, department policies and on-line medical command. Is constantly mindful of the treatment modality that will be more appropriate for the patient's illness or injury.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and practices good communication techniques to keep the patient and family informed regarding their care provision.
  • Completes the appropriate BLS skills lab, CPR and continuing education credits as required to maintain certification. Completes all required hospital and departmental education and competencies in a timely manner.
  • Operates department vehicle in a safe and lawful manner. Reports to supervisor all traffic violations and other infractions (both on and off the job). Maintains an accident-free record (on the job) during the evaluation period.
  • Responds without delay to emergencies or in a timely manner to calls for assistance or transportation. Coordinates responses with EMS staff, hospital staff, patients and family and outside agencies so that transportation and care are provided appropriately.
  • Documents patient care on the ambulance trip sheet accurately and legibly in accordance with State and department policies. Collects and legibly documents all required paperwork such as information for patient billing or other record keeping purposes.
  • Inspects assigned vehicle and equipment along with performing other station duties in a timely manner to ensure that equipment and supplies are available and in working order so that proper patient care can be delivered. Reports missing or broken equipment to a supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Washes and disinfects medical equipment and emergency medical vehicles in accordance with appropriate standards.
  • Arranges the scheduling of ambulances and vans in a timely manner as requested and necessary.
  • Reports and documents any concerns, issues or events which are undesired, or which have the potential to escape.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education.
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in health care related field preferred.
  • 5 years’ experience in Pre-Hospital setting
  • Experience in Healthcare setting.
License, Certification & Clearances
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (if out of state hire current Department of Motor Vehicle record report required and obtain PA Current Driver License within 30 days of hire).
  • · Completion of Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) (PA Recognized)
  • · Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program for the Professional Rescuer.
  • · Certified by the PA Department of Health as an EMT-B.
  • · Act 33 with renewal
  • · Act 34 with renewal
  • · Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
  • Travel may be expected locally between Independence Health System locations.
