Job summary

The State of Hawai'i, Department of Human Services, seeks a Rehabilitation Education Specialist in Honolulu to assess needs and provide individual and group instruction in personal care, home management, and communication for adults who are blind, low vision, or deaf-blind.

You will work within a professional team in a day rehabilitation center and help clients prepare for competitive integrated employment.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
One year of progressively responsible professional work experience providing direct services to individuals with disabilities.
Progressive experience in rehabilitation instruction for blind/visually impaired individuals; experience in personal care, home management, and communication is preferred.
Substitutions allowed: a master’s degree in teaching the blind may substitute for General Experience and one year of Specialized Experience; a bachelor’s degree in Special Education may substitute for General Experience.

Responsibilities

Assess needs and abilities and provide individual and group instruction in personal care, home management, and communication skills.
Work as part of a professional team in a day rehabilitation center setting.
Provide consultation and technical assistance to other branches, individuals, and organizations who work with individuals with disabilities.
Assist clients to prepare for, secure, retain, or advance in competitive integrated employment and to function more independently at home and in the community.
