Job summary

Lunenburg County Public Schools is seeking an Elementary Special Education Teacher to support students with disabilities across multiple settings. Under the direction of the principal, you will develop individualized education programs (IEPs), deliver specialized instruction, and collaborate with general educators and specialists to adapt the curriculum.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in an approved program for special education – general curriculum or a major in special education – general curriculum, or 27 semester hours in the education of students with disabilities.
  • Must be eligible or possess a Virginia Collegiate Professional License.
  • Prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
  • Employ special educational strategies to improve development of language, cognition, and memory.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior as per IEPs within a positive behavioral support system.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities using various techniques.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction with observation and inquiry.
  • Establish and enforce classroom rules and procedures conducive to learning.
  • Meet with parents to discuss progress and determine priorities for the children’s IEPs.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs.
  • Maintain accurate student records and prepare required reports.
