Job Summary
Coforge is seeking an experienced Employment Counsel to join its Global Legal team and serve as the primary legal advisor on labor and employment matters for Coforge’s U.S. operations, while also supporting employment matters across Coforge’s global footprint, including India, the UK and Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
This role covers the full employment law lifecycle— day-to-day advice, compliance, policy development, investigations, disputes and their resolution, and regulatory proceedings—across a large, multi-state and multinational workforce that spans technology professionals, delivery teams, and contact-center operations.
You will serve as a trusted partner to Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, Immigration, and Business Leaders —providing practical, risk-calibrated advice that supports Coforge’s growth while keeping the company compliant in a fast-changing regulatory environment.
Experience advising a multi-state or multinational employer, ideally in IT services, technology, or professional services, is highly valued in this role.
- Location: Princeton, NJ; Dallas, TX; or Santa Clara, CA office. Candidates outside these areaswill be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Employment Type: Full-time, exempt
Key Responsibilities include:
- Advice & Counsel: Provide timely, practical advice to HR and management on hiring, onboarding, performance management, discipline, terminations, accommodations, leaves of absence, compensation, and workforce changes.
- Compliance: Monitor and advise on compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, WARN, and state equivalents (with particular focus on California, New Jersey, and Texas), as well as wage-and-hour, exempt/non-exempt classification, and independent contractor rules.
- Policy Making: Draft, review, and maintain the U.S. employee handbook and workplace policies in collaboration with Humar Resources; lead updates in response to legal developments such as pay transparency, paid leave, restrictive covenant, background check, and AI-in-employment laws; harmonize policies across acquired entities.
- Disputes & Resolution: Manage employment claims from demand letter through resolution—including agency charges, single-plaintiff and class/collective actions, PAGA claims, and arbitrations; develop strategy, negotiate settlements, and oversee outside counsel, budgets, and litigation holds.
- Regulatory Proceedings: Lead responses to inquiries, charges, audits, and investigations by the EEOC, U.S. Department of Labor, NLRB, OSHA, and state agencies (e.g., California Civil Rights Department, New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, Texas Workforce Commission).
- Investigations: Conduct or direct internal workplace investigations into harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and misconduct complaints; advise on findings and remedial action.
- Workforce Transactions: Advise on reductions in force, reorganizations, and integrations, including WARN analysis, OWBPA-compliant separation agreements, and adverse impact review; support employment due diligence and post-closing integration for M&A.
- Agreements & Documentation: Draft and negotiate offer letters, employment and separation agreements, confidentiality and restrictive covenant agreements, and arbitration programs; review employment-related terms in client and vendor contracts (e.g., non-solicitation, background screening, co-employment).
- Global Employment Support: Support Coforge’s global employment matters in partnership with regional legal teams and local outside counsel, including cross-border policies and programs, international assignments and secondments, employee transfers between jurisdictions, global investigations, workforce changes outside the U.S., and employment aspects of international acquisitions and integrations.
- Cross-Functional Support: Partner with the Immigration team on employment issues affecting visa-holding employees (including LCA wage and worksite obligations), and with Talent Acquisition on compliant use of AI tools in recruiting and screening.
- Training: Develop and deliver training for HR, managers, and employees on topics such as harassment prevention, compliant interviewing, wage-and-hour, and manager responsibilities.
- Legal Judgment: Balances legal risk with business objectives; gives clear, actionable recommendations rather than academic analysis.
- Business Partnership: Builds credibility with HR and operational leaders; understands how the business runs and tailors advice accordingly.
- Communication: Explains complex legal issues clearly and concisely to non-lawyers, verbally and in writing.
- Integrity & Discretion: Handles sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism and sound ethical judgment.
- Ownership: Manages a high-volume docket independently, prioritizes effectively, and drives matters to resolution.
- Adaptability: Thrives in a fast-paced, global, matrixed organization and responds constructively to change.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with colleagues across geographies and functions, including teams in India and Europe.
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Active bar admission and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, and eligibility to register as in-house counsel in the state of the work location where required.
- 5+ years of labor and employment law experience, gained at a law firm, in-house, or a combination of both.
- Substantive knowledge of federal and multi-state employment law, including wage-and-hour, discrimination, leave, and accommodation laws.
- Demonstrated experience handling agency charges, employment litigation or arbitration, and settlement negotiations.
- Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Combination of law firm and in-house experience.
- Experience supporting an IT services, technology, consulting, or staffing company.
- Experience with California-specific employment laws, including PAGA and wage-and-hour class actions.
- Experience advising on workforce issues for employees in H-1B and other visa categories, in coordination with immigration counsel.
- Experience supporting employment matters outside the U.S. (e.g., India, UK, EU) or managing employment issues for a multinational workforce.
- Experience with M&A employment due diligence, integrations, and reductions in force.
- Familiarity with emerging laws governing the use of AI and automated tools in employment decisions.
