Job summary

The Carlyle Group is seeking an Employment Counsel to join its Legal and Compliance team in New York, NY (or Washington, DC). The role supports the Global Head of Employment Law and the HCM team on all employment matters and requires in‑office presence four days a week.

Ideal candidates will have a JD from a top‑tier law school, active NY or DC bar admission, and 6+ years of relevant experience, including large law firm or in‑house practice focusing on employment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; JD from a top‑tier law school with strong academic performance.
  • Must be an active member of the District of Columbia or New York bar (as applicable).
  • 6+ years of relevant experience, including at major law firm and/or in-house counsel focused on employment matters.
  • Competencies: attention to detail, time management, organizational skills, confidentiality, teamwork, external advisor management; private equity/financial industry experience preferred; global experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Advise global HCM partners and team on employment law, employee relations, policies, procedures, and investigations.
  • Draft and negotiate employment agreements and separation agreements including restrictive covenants.
  • Provide or coordinate training on employment practices and anti-harassment.
  • Educate the HCM team on employment matters and templates to enhance self-sufficiency.
  • Manage outside counsel and other advisors in employment matters.

Job description

Position Summary

The employment counsel will be a member of Carlyle’s Legal and Compliance team and will work closely with the Global Head of Employment Law and the Human Capital Management (HCM) team to provide guidance on all legal aspects related to employment matters. The ideal candidate is a business-minded attorney who thrives in a fast-paced work environment, manages multiple time-sensitive projects, demonstrates strong attention to detail, is a creative problem‑solver, and responds quickly to internal firm client needs. This position can be located in Washington, DC or New York, NY and requires in‑office presence 4 days per week.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist the Global Head of Employment Law in advising Carlyle’s global HCM business partners and other members of the global HCM team on employment law, employee relations, employee communication materials, employment policies, procedures, handbooks, benefits, compliance, internal investigations, and related matters.
  • Draft and negotiate employment agreements, separation agreements including restrictive covenants.
  • Provide and/or coordinate training on employment best practices and anti‑harassment.
  • Educate the HCM team on employment matters, including agreement templates, to enhance self‑sufficiency.
  • Manage outside counsel and other advisors in connection with employment matters.
Requirements
  • Education & Certificates: Bachelor’s degree; JD from a top‑tier law school with strong academic performance.
  • Must be an active member of the District of Columbia or New York bar (as applicable).
  • 6+ years of overall relevant professional experience, including experience at a major law firm and/or as in‑house counsel focused on employment matters.
  • Competencies & Attributes: Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills with a logical/analytical approach; ability to manage multiple high‑priority requests in a demanding, fast‑paced environment while maintaining confidentiality; teamwork and external advisor management skills; familiarity with private equity or financial industry preferred; global experience preferred; proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
Benefits & Compensation

Compensation range: $200,000 to $230,000 base salary, with the possibility of an annual discretionary incentive program. Additional benefits include retirement, health, life and disability insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, family planning benefits, and wellness programs.
