Description

The ideal candidate must be able to practice law in Maryland.

Fortis Employment Law is a boutique civil rights and employment law practice representing Maryland workers in discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, and wage theft cases. We're seeking an entry-level Maryland attorney. This position is primarily remote.

As an Attorney, you’ll work directly with the managing attorney on every case — gaining one-on-one mentorship, meaningful courtroom experience, and real responsibility early in your career.

We are a remote-first firm with a manageable caseload of 15–20 cases, quarterly in-person syncs, and a strong commitment to balance and growth. Attorneys share in a 25% contingency bonus pool, receive 20 days of paid leave plus paid parental leave, and get a $500 monthly healthcare stipend (with group coverage planned as we grow). If you want to launch your career in employment and civil rights law with hands-on experience and the support to thrive, we can't wait to meet you!

Responsibilities

  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and correspondence.
  • Conduct legal research and apply findings to active cases.
  • Communicate regularly with clients to keep them informed and supported.
  • Track deadlines and ensure cases move forward proactively.
  • Participate in mediations, hearings, and trials alongside the managing attorney.
  • Accurately record time spent on substantive case work for fee petitions.
  • Collaborate with the managing attorney on case strategy and execution.
  • Contribute to quarterly in-person firm sync meetings and overall firm culture.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Maryland bar (federal admission a plus)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines with reliability and attention to detail.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset — you’ll always be working closely with another attorney.
  • Genuine interest in employment law, civil rights, and advocating for workers.

Preferred but not required:

  • Prior experience in litigation, legal research, or client-facing work (internships, clinics, or clerkships count).
Compensation

$75,000 - $105,000 yearly

About Fortis Employment Law

Fortis Employment Law is a boutique civil rights and employment law practice led by Maryland employment attorney Joseph Gibson. We represent Maryland workers in discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, and wage theft cases. As a solo-founded firm, you won’t get lost in a big bureaucracy — instead, you’ll work directly with the managing attorney, gaining one-on-one mentorship and significant courtroom experience early in your career.

Every case is staffed with two attorneys — you and the managing attorney, or, as we grow, a senior attorney. This model ensures you’ll never be on your own, but you’ll also take real responsibility for moving cases forward, building skills, and directly serving clients.

We are a remote-first practice: attorneys can work anywhere with a quiet, professional space and reliable internet. We gather quarterly for in-person sync meetings to stay connected and aligned.
