Job summary

Simpson Strong-Tie is seeking an Employee and Labor Relations Manager to lead investigations, ensure compliance with employment laws, and support fair policy application across the organization. The role involves partnering with HR on grievances, arbitration prep, and performance management, with heavy emphasis on documentation and analytics.

The position requires 3–5 years of experience in labor relations, JD preferred, and a willingness to travel.

Qualifications

  • JD degree preferred.
  • SHRM-SCP preferred.
  • 3–5 years of employee/labor relations experience.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, Title VII, NLRA).
  • Experience in workplace investigations is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Labor and Employee Relations Management – 45%: interpret and apply collective bargaining agreements, resolve grievances, and advise on performance management and disciplinary actions.
  • Investigations – 25%: develop and conduct investigations with HR collaboration.
  • Compliance & Policy Review – 15%: align policies with federal, state and local laws.
  • Training & Education – 10%: deliver trainings on employee/labor relations topics.
  • Reporting & Analytics – 5%: track trends and provide data for strategic decisions.

This role is responsible for leading investigations, ensuring compliance with employment laws, fostering a positive work environment, and supporting fair and consistent application of company policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, a detailed-oriented approach to investigations, and a deep understanding of labor and employment laws and employee relations best practices.WHAT YOU’LL BE DOINGLabor and Employee Relations Management – 45%Interpret and apply collective bargaining agreements.Partner with HR to resolve grievances and support arbitration preparation.Collaborate with HR leadership on labor/employee-related issues.Provide guidance to HR on performance management, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions.Maintain documentation and case records for employee relations matters.Investigations – 25%Develop, lead, and conduct investigations into employee concerns, ensuring timely and fair resolution.Partner with HR to refine documentation standards, templates, and investigation workflows.Compliance & Policy Review – 15%Partner with AGC Employment & Litigation to ensure company policies and practices adhere to federal, state, and local employment laws.Develop, review, and support compliant implementations of HR policies and procedures.Monitor legal changes impacting employee and labor relations.Training & Education – 10%Support development and delivery of training sessions to HR department on employee/labor relations and investigation topics.Reporting & Analytics – 5%Track and analyze employee relations trends and metrics.Prepare reports for Legal to support strategic decision-making.DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCEJD degree preferredSHRM-SCP preferred3 – 5 years of experience in employee and/or labor relations, preferably in a unionized environment.Strong knowledge of employment laws (e.g., FMLA, ADA, FLSA, Title VII, NLRA (CA specific – preferred)).3 – 5 years of experience in workplace investigations (in-house environment a plus).Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.Strong mediation and conflict-resolution skills.Demonstrated ability to manage high-pressure and complex situations with empathy and creativity.Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.TRAVEL REQUIREDThis job requires 35% - 50% travel to our manufacturing locations in the U.S.WORK STATUS & LOCATIONNorthern California Hybrid (candidates must be able to work from our Stockton location at least 3 days a week)RELOCATIONRelocation is not available for this position.PAY$100,900 - $171,500 / yearPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTThe physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
