Qualifications

Emissions and OBD Quality Manager

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The Electrified Propulsion Test & Verification (ePTV) team is one of the groups in the Electrified Propulsion Development division of HATCI responsible for delivering propulsion system performance, emissions compliance, onboard diagnostics, quality, validation, and technical support for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia vehicles.

HATCI is seeking a highly motivated and technically accomplishedEmissions, OBD, and Powertrain Quality Manager to lead a team of 4 to 8 engineers responsible for identifying, investigating, and resolving engine calibration-related vehicle issues discovered in customer vehicles, assembly plant operations, and regulated in-use compliance programs. This position serves as the technical leader for quality investigation and resolution activities associated with gasoline and hybrid propulsion systems, ensuring rapid root-cause identification and implementation of robust corrective actions.

The successful candidate will establish and drive a closed-loop quality process with the objective of reducing field, plant, and in-use issues to zero while proactively improving engine calibration development and verification methodologies. The team will leverage data and insights from engineering development programs, durability testing, warranty trends, assembly plant investigations, connected vehicle data, and off-nominal vehicle evaluations conducted during summer, winter, altitude, and other environmental test programs.

This role requires a strong technical foundation in powertrain controls, emissions, OBD, and vehicle calibration, combined with demonstrated leadership capability and a passion for data-driven engineering. The ideal candidate will also champion advanced analytics techniques to identify emerging risks, improve detection methods, and drive continuous improvement within calibration development and validation processes. This position reports to the Senior Manager of ePTV.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Lead and develop a team of 4 to 8 engineers responsible for field quality investigations, assembly plant support activities, and regulated in-use emissions and OBD issue resolution.
• Drive rapid investigation and closure of engine calibration, emissions, OBD, drivability, catalyst performance, and propulsion system quality concerns identified in customer vehicles, production environments, and regulatory compliance programs.
• Establish and maintain a closed-loop issue management process focused on achieving zero recurring customer, plant, and in-use quality issues.
• Lead cross-functional root-cause investigations utilizing calibration data, warranty information, vehicle logs, service reports, plant quality data, and engineering test results.
• Identify systemic weaknesses in calibration development, controls strategies, verification plans, and validation processes, and drive implementation of preventive countermeasures.
• Leverage development, durability, and environmental test data, including summer, winter, altitude, and other off-nominal operation testing, to improve issue detection, calibration robustness, and verification effectiveness.
• Collaborate with calibration development, controls, certification, durability, software, and validation teams to ensure lessons learned from field and plant investigations are incorporated into future vehicle programs.
• Develop quantitative performance metrics and leading indicators to monitor vehicle quality, emissions compliance, and calibration robustness throughout product development and production.
• Champion the use of advanced data analytics, statistical methods, automated reporting, anomaly detection, predictive modeling, and AI‑assisted engineering tools to accelerate issue identification and resolution.
• Analyze large‑scale vehicle datasets from warranty systems, fleet testing, connected vehicles, OTA sources, and development programs to identify emerging trends before customer impact.
• Provide executive leadership with concise technical assessments, issue status reporting, risk evaluations, and recommendations for corrective and preventive actions.
• Foster cross‑functional relationships with North American and Korean quality, assembly plant, and certification organizations.
• Document and suggest calibration and control strategies which reduce deterioration of emissions control hardware and improve statistical separation between failed and acceptable components.
• Coordinate with engineering team at assembly plants and provide guidance and training in issue triage and data acquisition techniques
• Leverage customer and service technician verbatims for system and sub‑system root‑cause analysis.
• Manage engineering resources, budgets, fleet assets, test infrastructure, development plans, and program deliverables across multiple vehicle programs.
• Develop organizational capability in emissions durability, diagnostics, connected vehicle analytics, aftertreatment technologies, and data‑driven engineering methodologies.
• Provide mentorship, coaching, performance management, and technical leadership to engineering team members.
• Travel domestically and internationally up to 15%

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

• Educational Requirements:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.

• Related Industry Experience Requirements:
  • 10+ years of automotive engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of emissions, OBD, aftertreatment development, powertrain controls, calibration, or durability engineering experience
  • 3+ years of technical leadership or direct people management experience
  • Demonstrated success leading engineering teams responsible for vehicle quality, field investigation, calibration validation, or production support activities.
  • Strong understanding of engine calibration development processes, verification methodologies, and production launch support.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods, anomaly detection, predictive analytics, and machine learning applications for vehicle development and quality improvement.
  • Experience transforming field lessons‑learned into process improvements that enhance calibration robustness and reduce customer issues.

• Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Deep understanding of gasoline and hybrid powertrain systems, combustion processes, and emissions control technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of catalyst aging mechanisms, emissions deterioration factors, aftertreatment performance monitoring, and useful‑life compliance requirements.
  • Experience analyzing vehicle emissions data and deterioration trends against engineering targets and certification requirements.
  • Working knowledge of data analytics to identify emerging vehicle quality trends and prioritize engineering investigations.
  • Experience working with large vehicle datasets, telematics data, connected vehicle analytics, warranty databases, and engineering test repositories.
  • Expertise in emissions and OBD root‑cause investigations including catalyst efficiency, oxygen sensor performance, combustion stability, fuel control systems, thermal management, and diagnostic monitor performance.
  • Strong understanding of data management strategies including signal definition, parameter selection, data quality validation, and reporting systems.
  • Working knowledge of modern analytics and visualization tools including Python, MATLAB, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Databricks, or equivalent platforms.
  • Strong understanding of CAN, LIN, Ethernet, UDS diagnostics, J1979, and vehicle communication protocols.
  • Experience with ETAS INCA, ATI Vision, CANape, MATLAB/Simulink, or comparable calibration and development environments.
  • Strong understanding of OBD regulations, monitor development, diagnostic robustness requirements, and fault detection strategies.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving skills with a data‑driven approach to engineering decision making.

• Preferred Requirements:
  • Understanding of OBD system development and integration with emissions calibration strategies.
  • Direct experience supporting full useful‑life emissions durability demonstrations (0‑150,000 miles).
  • Experience utilizing large vehicle datasets to perform trend analysis, anomaly detection, predictive diagnostics, and engineering performance assessments.
  • Experience with connected vehicle platforms, telematics systems, and remote data collection.
  • Proficiency with Python, SQL, Databricks, Power BI, Tableau, MATLAB, or similar analytics platforms.
