Emissions and OBD Fleet Manager

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The Electrified Propulsion Test & Verification (ePTV) team is one of the groups in the Electrified Propulsion Development division of HATCI responsible for delivering propulsion system performance, emissions compliance, onboard diagnostics, quality, validation, and technical support for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia vehicles.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Emissions and OBD Fleet Manager to lead the gasoline and hybrid validation fleet team in Superior Township, Michigan. This position is responsible for leading the verification of pre-production vehicle emissions calibrations, aftertreatment, and on-board diagnostics for future Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) applications, including advanced emissions programs targeting LEV IV, Tier 4, SULEV20, and SULEV30 compliance. This position reports to the senior manager of ePTV.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Lead and manage a team of fleet and emissions engineers responsible for validating emissions compliance, OBD performance, and aftertreatment durability for gasoline, hybrid, and future electrified powertrain programs.
• Define and execute North American emissions durability fleet programs, including vehicle deployment, mileage accumulation, route strategy, durability testing schedules, and overall fleet health management from 0 to 150,000 miles.
• Develop and maintain fleet validation plans to verify compliance with EPA, CARB, LEV IV, Tier 4, SULEV20, SULEV30, and future regulatory requirements throughout the full useful life of the vehicle.
• Lead periodic emissions and OBD evaluations throughout the fleet lifecycle, including tailpipe emissions testing, diagnostic system verification, catalyst aging assessments, and emissions deterioration analysis at defined mileage intervals.
• Analyze emissions deterioration trends relative to certification and engineering development targets, providing technical recommendations and risk assessments to program leadership.
• Lead root-cause investigations for emissions, OBD, catalyst efficiency, drivability, and aftertreatment performance issues identified during durability fleet operation.
• Drive development and implementation of corrective actions, calibration enhancements, hardware recommendations, and control strategy improvements to ensure emissions compliance and robustness through end-of-life requirements.
• Define vehicle data acquisition requirements for fleet vehicles, including data logger architecture, communication interfaces, data collection strategies, and parameter selection for gasoline, hybrid, and future powertrain configurations.
• Establish standardized data acquisition specifications and measurement plans that provide visibility into performance, catalyst behavior, emissions control system operation, OBD monitor execution, and customer usage conditions.
• Lead the development and deployment of fleet data analytics capabilities, including automated reporting, fleet health monitoring, trend analysis, anomaly detection, statistical analysis, and predictive analytics methodologies.
• Utilize vehicle and emissions datasets to identify emerging issues early in the development process and implement preventative actions prior to certification and Start of Production (SOP).
• Drive continuous improvement of connected fleet technologies, cloud-based analytics tools and fleet monitoring systems.
• Responsible for logging, tracking, prioritizing, and driving discovered issues to closure in coordination with local and global engineering teams.
• Generate and present executive-level summaries on fleet status, emissions performance, catalyst aging trends, OBD readiness, risk assessments, and program milestone achievement.
• Collaborate closely with powertrain controls, calibration, aftertreatment, vehicle integration, durability, testing, certification, software, and data science organizations to achieve program objectives.
• Manage engineering resources, budgets, fleet assets, test infrastructure, development plans, and program deliverables across multiple vehicle programs.
• Develop organizational capability in emissions durability, diagnostics, connected vehicle analytics, aftertreatment technologies, and data-driven engineering methodologies.
• Provide mentorship, coaching, performance management, and technical leadership to engineering team members.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on testing efficiency, fleet utilization, emissions modeling, predictive analytics, and issue detection methodologies.
• Travel domestically and internationally up to 15%

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

• Educational Requirements:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.

• Related Industry Experience Requirements:
  • 10+ years of automotive engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of emissions, OBD, aftertreatment development, powertrain controls, calibration, or durability engineering experience
  • 3+ years of technical leadership or direct people management experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading vehicle durability fleets and mileage accumulation programs
  • Experience developing and executing emissions durability or useful-life validation activities
  • Experience analyzing large vehicle datasets and applying advanced analytics techniques to engineering development.
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional investigations and issue resolution activities through production readiness

• Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Deep understanding of gasoline and hybrid powertrain systems, combustion processes, and emissions control technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience leading emissions durability fleet programs and mileage accumulation activities.
  • Strong knowledge of catalyst aging mechanisms, emissions deterioration factors, aftertreatment performance monitoring, and useful-life compliance requirements.
  • Experience analyzing vehicle emissions data and deterioration trends against engineering targets and certification requirements.
  • Expertise in emissions and OBD root-cause investigations including catalyst efficiency, oxygen sensor performance, combustion stability, fuel control systems, thermal management, and diagnostic monitor performance.
  • Experience defining vehicle data acquisition requirements including data loggers, cloud-based data collection platforms, and vehicle communication networks.
  • Strong understanding of fleet data management strategies including signal definition, parameter selection, data quality validation, storage architectures, and reporting systems.
  • Experience utilizing large vehicle datasets to perform trend analysis, anomaly detection, predictive diagnostics, and engineering performance assessments.
  • Working knowledge of modern analytics and visualization tools including Python, MATLAB, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Databricks, or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience establishing automated reporting and monitoring systems for fleet operations and engineering decision-making.
  • Strong understanding of CAN, LIN, Ethernet, UDS diagnostics, J1979, and vehicle communication protocols.
  • Experience with ETAS INCA, ATI Vision, CANape, MATLAB/Simulink, or comparable calibration and development environments.
  • Strong understanding of OBD regulations, monitor development, diagnostic robustness requirements, and fault detection strategies.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to engineering decision making.

• Preferred Requirements:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
  • Understanding of OBD system development and integration with emissions calibration strategies.
  • Direct experience supporting full useful-life emissions durability demonstrations (0-150,000 miles).
  • Experience with connected vehicle platforms, telematics systems, and remote fleet data collection.
