Job description

Emission Certification & Regulation Manager

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)'s Emission Certification & Regulation Team (EC&R) supports Hyundai and Kia vehicles, including light- and heavy-duty models, to meet evolving environmental and emissions standards at federal, state, and local levels. The team manages certification applications with EPA CoC (Certificate of Conformity) & ARB EO (Executive Order), tracks risks to SOP (Start of Production) timing, and represents Hyundai Motor Company & Kia Corporation in industry and regulatory activities. The team also interfaces with regulators, develops regulations, and leads North American regulatory meetings.

What You Will Do
  1. Manage the U.S. environmental regulatory program, monitoring legislation, regulations, and trends concerning motor vehicles, including GHG emissions, criteria emissions, ZEV, chemicals, fuel economy, batteries, and other environmental issues.
  2. Oversee emissions certification activities for Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) light- and heavy-duty vehicles, ensuring accuracy and SOP timing, with regular communication with EPA and CARB teams.
  3. Prepare comments on regulatory actions, participate in industry workgroups, and respond to internal requests regarding regulatory or certification requirements.
  4. Meet with government officials, respond to information requests, and review upcoming regulatory criteria and plans for new models.
  5. Represent the company in industry trade groups like the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AFAI).
  6. Research and interpret U.S. environmental regulations, providing recommendations through reports.
  7. Collaborate with legal teams on regulation and law interpretation concerning vehicle environmental matters.
  8. Supervise and mentor engineers responsible for emissions and regulatory activities.
  9. Set departmental goals, manage budgets, and determine staffing needs.
  10. Create technical reports and undertake additional projects.
  11. Handle administrative tasks such as purchasing, timekeeping, and travel arrangements.
  12. Travel up to 30% domestically and internationally as needed.
What You Will Bring to the Role
  1. Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Engineering, Public Policy, or a similar field.
  2. At least 8 years of experience in Regulatory, Certification, or Compliance Program Management.
  3. 10 years of negotiation and consultation experience with industry and regulatory groups.
  4. Valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  5. Legal authorization to work in the U.S. for applicants applying to Hyundai and KIA positions.
