Overview
The Emergent Bilingual Specialist – Newcomer Support provides direct instructional and programmatic support for Emergent Bilingual (EB) students, with a strong focus on newcomer students. The specialist promotes TELPAS readiness, ensures accurate EB identification and ongoing support. This role includes developing a structured Newcomer Support class and ensuring all documentation aligns with district and LPAC processes and procedures.
Essential Duties
- Create and manage a dedicated Google Classroom to support Newcomer students
- Build welcoming, culturally responsive relationships with Newcomer students and their families
- Provide targeted academic support using a structured “content mastery” approach
- Organize and facilitate TELPAS practice opportunities to support student readiness
- Collaborate with campus LPAC Administrators to prepare and conduct LPAC meetings regarding newcomer students
- Assist with intake, identification, and placement of Newcomer EB students per LPAC compliance guidelines
- Maintain and update all required LPAC records in the district’s student data management systems
- Communicate Newcomer EB student data, TELPAS, and LPAC information to campus staff
- Monitor Newcomer EB grades and progress via ongoing grade checks and teacher communication
- Attend and contribute to professional learning communities, L-10 meetings, and school events to support and assist with EB Newcomers
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Emergent Bilingual Supervisor or Coordinator
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- Five (5) or more years of experience in similar roles.
- Knowledge of ELPS, TELPAS and LPAC procedures
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, etc.
- Proficient in Spanish and English (preferred)
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Detail-oriented with strong time management abilities
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- Flexible and responsive to the needs of diverse learners and school contexts
Education & Certification Requirements
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, bilingual education, English as a Second Language (ESL), or a related field.
- A master’s degree in education, educational administration, curriculum and instruction, or a related field is often preferred and may be required for higher-level positions.
- A Valid Texas teacher certification, which may include: ESL Supplemental certification (Grades EC-12); Bilingual Education certification (Grades EC-12) if the position involves working in a bilingual program.
- Special Education certification may be beneficial, particularly for coordination with Special Education (SPED) programs and committees.
