Job summary

Louisiana State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital seeks Veterinary Assistant level 1–3 to support 24/7 emergency and ICU services. You will assist with triage, stabilization, anesthesia recovery, and high-level nursing care while supporting teaching activities and student mentoring.

The role spans multiple levels with responsibilities in emergency admissions, patient monitoring, and collaboration with veterinarians and technicians.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree; OR associate's degree in veterinary technology OR credentials as a vet tech or equivalent OR 3 years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist with advanced veterinary nursing care for emergency, critically ill, and hospitalized patients.
• Administer medications, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture and other technical nursing procedures.
• Operate and monitor life-support equipment, recover and monitor anesthetized and post-surgical patients, restrain patients for examinations and procedures, and maintain medical records.
• Assist with emergency admissions, assessments, diagnostics, treatments, nursing observations, prescriptions, and client communication.
• Maintain emergency department and ICU readiness through equipment maintenance, inventory management, and stocking of medications and supplies.
• Provide holiday, overnight, weekend, and emergency coverage as assigned.
• Mentor and train veterinary students, interns, residents, technician students, and newly hired staff.
