Job summary

Dana Safety Supply is seeking an Emergency Vehicle Technician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and inspect emergency response vehicles and equipment. The role focuses on electrical systems, lighting, radios, and upfitting components for police, fire, EMS, and government fleets.

The EVT must read wiring diagrams, perform diagnostics, and ensure compliance with manufacturer and regulatory standards. Strong attention to safety and documentation is essential.

Qualifications

Position Summary

The Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and inspection of emergency response vehicles and associated equipment. This role ensures that police, fire, EMS, public safety, and government fleet vehicles remain operational, safe, and compliant with applicable manufacturer, agency, and regulatory standards. The technician works on vehicle electrical systems, communications equipment, emergency lighting, sirens, mobile computing systems, prisoner transport equipment, and specialized upfitting components.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and configure emergency vehicle equipment, including warning lights, sirens, radios, antennas, cameras, computer docking stations, prisoner transport systems, gun locks, and specialty equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and electronic issues affecting vehicle operations and emergency equipment functionality. Along with decommissioning emergency vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections to ensure vehicle readiness, reliability, and compliance with agency standards.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, technical manuals, schematics, and installation instructions.
  • Conduct troubleshooting of vehicle electrical systems, power distribution systems, and communication equipment.
  • Install and terminate wiring harnesses, connectors, relays, switches, circuit protection devices, and related components.
  • Perform quality control inspections on completed installations and repairs.
  • Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specifications, federal regulations, safety standards, and organizational policies.
  • Maintain accurate service records, installation documentation, and inventory accountability.
  • Coordinate with fleet managers, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, EMS personnel, vendors, and manufacturers to resolve technical issues.
  • Test and verify functionality of emergency lighting, sirens, radios, GPS systems, mobile data terminals, and other mission-critical equipment.
  • Support vehicle commissioning, decommissioning, and fleet modernization initiatives.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to OSHA and workplace safety standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience in automotive electrical systems, vehicle upfitting, fleet maintenance, or emergency vehicle installation.
  • Knowledge of 12V and 24V electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing instruments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 75 pounds.
  • Valid Driver’s License and must maintain the company’s driving guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Vehicle Emergency ASE Certification(s).
  • Experience installing public safety communications systems.
  • Knowledge of mobile radio systems, surveillance equipment, and vehicle networking technologies.
  • Experience supporting law enforcement, fire, EMS, military, or government fleet operations.
  • Familiarity with vehicle interior disassembly and reassembly, as well as front bumper disassembly and reassembly. Manufacturers such as Whelen, SoundOff Signal, Havis, Gamber-Johnson, Motorola, Kenwood, and Panasonic Toughbook systems.
