Overview
This position is responsible for providing patient care and assisting healthcare providers in performing assigned patient procedures within the scope of training. The position receives general supervision from RN, APN, PA, or Physician in providing patient care.
Responsibilities
Patient Care- Under general supervision of the RN, APN, PA, or Physician, performs assigned procedures including, but not limited to: electrocardiogram testing (EKG); wound cleansing; initial, repeat, and orthostatic vital sign measurements; application of monitor leads; specimen collection; and transporting stable telemetry or non-monitored patients to nursing units. Performs blood glucose testing; phlebotomy; saline lock insertion; IV discontinuation.
- Sets up and prepares patients, assists with patient exams, and minor surgical or health procedures within scope of training such as lumbar punctures, sterile instrument and field preparation, suturing lacerations, chest tube insertion, closed fracture reduction, gastric lavage, pelvic examinations, restraint application, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Applies orthopedic devices, including premanufactured and plaster splints under physician direction.
- Performs specimen collection, ensuring accuracy and integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age groups as required by Lab. Performs point-of-care testing for blood glucose, hemoccult, gastroccult, or other tests where permitted by state law, and performs quality control checks on point-of-care equipment.
Communication- Receives general supervision from RN, APN, PA, or Physician and other licensed health professionals. Uses problem-solving skills and provides effective communication with patients, families, healthcare providers, and ancillary departments to ensure quality patient care.
- Provides updates to RN, Physician, or other providers regarding patient reactions or condition changes. Accurately records information in patient records, documenting vital signs, procedures, and equipment and techniques used.
Reporting and Documentation- Assesses and reports any unusual findings to RN and/or physician with appropriate documentation.
- Documents vital signs, procedures, and changes in patient condition accurately in the patient's chart.
- Implements clinical corrective actions within scope and documents appropriately in the EMR.
Stocking/Supplies- Monitors supply levels and reports needs. Notifies housekeeping, maintenance, biomedical engineering, and others to ensure proper equipment and a safe environment. Maintains appropriate stock levels in medication rooms, exam rooms, bedside carts, and specialty carts.
- Assists with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
Compliance/Safety- Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations, statutes, and company policies impacting the area of responsibility.
- Ensures all certifications and licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.
- Completes mandatory modules and job-specific training timely.
- Reports safety incidents promptly, attends safety training, and monitors the work environment for safety issues, ensuring safe work practices.
- Attends department meetings and educational sessions as required.
Qualifications
EducationHigh School Diploma or GED - Required
Certification & LicensuresBLS (American Heart Association) - Required
Certified Nursing Assistant license or Arizona Certified Emergency Medical Technician - Required
Maintains appropriate clinical competencies as assigned.
ExperiencePrevious Emergency Department experience - Preferred
Proficiency in computer use and basic software programs required, as healthcare relies heavily on technology.
