Job summary

Henry Ford Health in Dearborn, MI seeks an Emergency Room Technical Assistant (36 hours) for night/midnight shifts at Fairlane Medical Center. You will support RNs and Providers, perform basic procedures and ensure patient safety and comfort in a busy ER environment.

Required: High School diploma or GED and BCLS; prior ED tech/MA experience preferred. EMT license preferred. Eligible for full-time benefits and a fast-paced team-focused setting.

Qualifications

• Previous Emergency Department Technician or Medical Assistant experience preferred.
• EMT license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist RNs/Providers with assessments, examinations and treatments.
• Draw blood and collect specimens.
• Perform EKGs.
• Apply splints/immobilizers.
• Take vital signs in adults and pediatric patients.
• Insert nasogastric tubes as needed.
• Catheterize adult patients.
• Discontinue peripheral IVs and start IVs.
• Assist with procedures (suturing, casts).
• Assist in patient transports and room prep.
• Document patient care and maintain safety standards.

Education

Emergency Room Technical Assistant – 36 Hours

Eligible for Full Time Benefits

Shift: Midnights

Location: Dearborn – Fairlane Medical Center

Assist with patient care based on individual needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of a registered nurse or Provider.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

• Assists RNs and Providers with assessments, examinations and treatments as requested. The following list of treatments/examinations is not inclusive and may vary by Business Unit:
• Drawing blood and collection of specimens
• EKG’s
• Splint/immobilizers applications
• Taking vital signs on adults and pediatric patients
• Inserting neuro-gastric tubes
• Urethral catheterization of adult patients
• Discontinuance of peripheral IV’s
• Starting unmediated IV’s
• Prepares and assists Providers with procedures such as:
• Suturing-preps patients and prepares sterile trays.
• Application of casts.
• Miscellaneous procedures including pelvic exams, lumbar punctures.
• Assists patients as needed.
• Recognize potential of life-threatening dysrhythmias and abnormal vital signs and report same to RN/Provider.
• Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
• Documents patient care performed.
• Interact with patients and families as appropriate, ensuring excellent patient and customer experiences.
• Transports patients and supplies.
• Cleans equipment, monitors stock, and restocks equipment and supplies as required.Assists in ordering routine equipment; maintains enough stretchers, wheelchairs, suction equipment, etc. in ER area.
• Maintains departmental cleanliness and prepares rooms between patients

Education/Experience Required

• High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
• BCLS certification required.
• Previous Emergency Department Technician, Medical Assistant experience preferred.

Certifications/Licensures Required

One of the following certifications/programs required:

• B-EMT
• Graduate from a formal Medical Assistant program.
• Completion of a formal nursing education program.
• Completion of a formal medical doctor education program
• OR One (1) year of applicable Emergency Room Technical experience in lieu of above completed certification/program.

Additional Requirements

• (Must complete applicable certification/program within 12 months of hire).
• Successful completion of a 180-day orientation period required.
• EMT license preferred.
