Qualifications

  • CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain positive relationships with patients, families, and staff; lead the nursing department.
  • Provide guidance in the ER and support EMS leadership.
  • Contribute to QA reports and monitor staff adherence to policies.
  • Serve as primary contact for daily operational issues in nursing.
  • Assist with policy updates and nursing/EMS meetings; share call responsibilities.
  • Support onboarding and training of new nursing staff.
  • Oversee weekly supply ordering and inventory management.
  • Participate in hiring, staff selection, and performance evaluations.
  • Attend mandatory in-services and maintain skills verification.
  • Adhere to HIPAA, safety, and compliance policies.

Description

The ER/EMS Manager provides and oversees exceptional patient care in the Emergency Department, ensuring all services meet established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. This role maintains accurate records, ensures clinical competence, and upholds the Illinois Nurse Practice Act in all nursing practices.

In addition to supervising ER nursing staff, this leader manages the flow, scheduling, and behavioral standards of EMS staff—ensuring smooth operations and a safe, efficient environment for patients and staff alike.

Job Relationships
  1. Reports to Director of Nursing
  2. Inter-relationships with: All staff, peers, medical staff, administration and department supervisors.
  3. Interaction with patients, visitors, families, surveyors and regulatory agencies is required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform ongoing patient assessments, establish individualized care plans, monitor treatment responses, and update plans as needed.
  • Prioritize care, respond to emergencies, and ensure patient needs and activities of daily living (ADLs) are met in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Make purposeful rounds to evaluate the effectiveness of therapies and interventions, documenting all findings in the EHR per facility guidelines.
  • Interact with patients and families to provide education, discharge instructions, and appropriate referrals, documenting all teaching in the EHR.
  • Administer medications and treatments safely and efficiently.
  • Communicate with physicians regarding patient care, changes in condition, and clarification or execution of orders. Assist with treatments, procedures, and exams as needed.
  • Operate and supervise the operation of specialized medical equipment.
  • Assign care to ancillary personnel based on job descriptions, competencies, policies, and patient acuity. Collaborate with other departments and agencies to facilitate care.
  • Maintain positive relationships with patients, families, and staff, ensuring effective functioning of the nursing department.
  • Work in the emergency room as required, providing guidance and assistance to the ER nursing team.
  • Support the EMS lead with best practices and process improvements.
  • Compile information for quality assurance (QA) reports and monitor staff adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the primary contact for emergency nursing staff regarding daily operational issues.
  • Implement new policies and procedures, assist with nursing and EMS meetings, and share administrative call responsibilities.
  • Support onboarding and training of new nursing staff.
  • Manage weekly supply ordering and rotation of outdated stock.
  • Participate in hiring, staff selection, and performance evaluations.
  • Attend all mandatory in-services and maintain skills verification.
  • Adhere to compliance, safety, and HIPAA policies, maintaining confidentiality of sensitive patient information.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competency in EHR use.
  • Exhibit leadership, objectivity, administrative skill, and effective personnel supervision.
