Job description

Job Description - Emergency Medicine Postgraduate Physician Assistant Program (251011)

We believe equity is essential for optimal health outcomes and are committed to achieving health for all by actively eliminating barriers due to racism, poverty, gender identity, and other determinants of health. We are dedicated to promoting health equity and antiracism by fostering an environment that celebrates diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds or historically under-resourced communities to apply.

Hennepin Healthcare offers opportunities for Physician Assistants to advance their education through our Emergency Medicine Postgraduate Training Program. These PAs will evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with various health conditions following departmental guidelines.

This intensive 13-month program combines didactic and clinical training in emergency medicine, preparing graduates to begin a career with essential skills to be competent emergency medicine physician assistants. In the ED, postgraduate PAs will work alongside established APPs and physician residents under the supervision of emergency medicine faculty physicians. They will also participate in off-service rotations to gain relevant specialty experience, practicing under supervision. The program includes monthly hands-on skills sessions in the simulation center and simulation case scenarios. By the end, participants will have obtained or recertified ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certifications.

Upon completion, trainees will receive a certificate of completion and may be considered for employment at Hennepin Healthcare if an opening exists. These positions are benefit-eligible, with salary and benefits comparable to PGY-1 physician residents. Applicants must apply through this platform and complete all supplemental application requirements listed on the program website. All materials must be received by 8/31 to be considered.

The schedule includes:

  • Weekly didactic sessions
  • Rotating 24-hour shifts in the ED and other departments during off-service rotations
  • On-call and backup shifts

Responsibilities:

  • Provide primary and acute care to adult and pediatric patients in the Emergency Department
  • Assess patients' medical, physical, and psychosocial status
  • Gather medical histories, perform physical exams, and identify health risks
  • Document observations, interventions, and plans of care accurately and promptly
  • Develop differential diagnoses based on assessments
  • Identify patient, family, or community needs and develop care and education plans
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, perform procedures, and prescribe medications and devices as appropriate
  • Refer patients to other health professionals and community resources
  • Contribute to medical and nursing education programs

Qualifications:
