Job Summary:

This position provides clinical and technical support, assists nurses and medical staff to ensure quality care, and performs clerical, communication, and related duties to facilitate the efficient functioning of the Care Center services. Responsibilities align with standards outlined in the competency-based evaluation tool. The incumbent supports the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and demonstrates a commitment to quality service for patients, physicians, the public, and co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Perform according to expectations and standards set by the position description.
  • Build collaborative relationships with MWHC/ED staff, nursing, and physicians, both verbally and through accurate documentation.
  • Assist nurses in collecting patient data and specimens.
  • Support medical staff by performing designated patient care procedures.
  • Participate in infection control, performance improvement, and risk management plans.
  • Assist the Manager with regulatory readiness as needed.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, customer service, and team-building skills.
  • Maintain licensure or certifications required for the position.
  • Utilize hospital information systems to perform clerical responsibilities.
  • Facilitate communication between diagnostic/testing areas, patients, and families.
  • Respond to patient call lights and relay requests to appropriate personnel promptly.
  • Act as a customer-friendly unit receptionist for staff, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
  • Coordinate equipment and supply needs with the Supply Agent and assist with equipment maintenance.
  • Notify appropriate departments of equipment malfunctions and initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Perform duties of other care team members as appropriate.
  • Carry out Communication Coordinator responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform venipuncture, start IVs, and collect specimens with proper labeling and transportation.
  • Apply cardiac monitors, perform 12-lead EKGs, and set up sterile trays for procedures.
  • Insert Foley catheters and document intake/output when appropriate.
  • Perform splinting and apply orthopedic adjuncts per physician orders.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Current Virginia State EMT Certification and/or National Registry required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR certification required at hire.
  • One year of EMT, military corpsman, or clinical-related experience preferred.
  • AHA ACLS and PALS certifications preferred.
