Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, West Virginia’s largest and most progressive public provider of Emergency, Non-Emergency Services, and Mobile Integrated Health Services is offering an exciting opportunity for highly motivated, compassionate, and organized individuals who want to start a rewarding career in EMS. We are currently accepting applications for our upcoming EMT Academy.

This EMT Academy will be full-time hours, Monday thru Friday, primarily from 8:30a-5p. The class will start in June 2025 and last approximately 6 weeks. Upon successful completion of the course, students will take their National Registry EMT-B Exam. Continued employment is contingent on successfully obtaining National Registry EMT-B certification. Applicants must be eligible to work any assigned position following certification as an EMT-B.

10 Students will be selected for this class. All applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 in order to be considered to move to the next round of the selection process.

The minimum qualifications to be selected for our EMT Academy include:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • WV driver’s license with safe driving record
  • Must be able to pass background check and drug screening
  • High degree of Professionalism, including both appearance and general demeanor
  • Handles pressure well with a strong ability to remain calm and patient as well as make quick decisions when necessary
  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 lbs. alone and equally 250 lbs. with assistance
  • Willingness to learn and grow with KCEAA!


Upon completion of the class, specific duties of an EMT-B include:

Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.

Drive ambulance or other vehicles to specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher.

Assist in rescuing victims as needed and transports sick and injured patients to appropriate treatment center.

Operate equipment, such as electrocardiograms (EKGS), external defibrillators, or bag valve mask resuscitators, in advanced life support environments.

Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as stomach suction, airway management, or heart monitoring during ambulance transport.

Observe, record, and report to physician the patient’s condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment administered.

Coordinate work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department personnel.

Communicate with dispatchers or medical command center personnel to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of victims, or to receive instructions for further treatment.

Decontaminate ambulance interior following treatment of patient with known or suspected infectious disease and report incident as required.

Attend training classes to maintain certification, keep abreast of new developments in the field of emergency services, or maintain existing knowledge.

Working conditions

As an EMT-B, the employee must be available for work on any shift as requested by KCEAA. This is a mission critical position. The employee is required to report to work when there is adverse weather, on holidays, and on short notice. The position may require work beyond the scheduled shift as requested and/or until properly relieved or released. While performing the duties of this job, the EMT-B may work in outside weather conditions all times of year, near moving mechanical parts and in conditions that could include exposure to fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to extreme cold and heat. The EMT-B may also be exposed to blood, saliva and other body substances, as well as irrational, combative patients and bystanders. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
