Job Overview

Position: EMT-R (Emergency Medical Responder)

Type: Central EMS

Responsibilities

• Respond to all service calls dispatched by the Central EMS communications center.
• Drive ambulance and escort EMTs and patients in accordance with SOP and protocols approved by the medical director.
• Maintain a clean and inspected ambulance; report any deficiencies immediately to the shift supervisor.
• Prepare and complete exposure, incident, daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required.
• Ensure crew members comply with Central EMS policies, procedures, and standards; report deficiencies to the shift supervisor.
• Verify vehicle compliance with all applicable state, local, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain punctual attendance at work and mandatory meetings.
• Maintain a professional appearance and conduct while in company uniform during all duties.
• Work independently and self‑motivate with minimal supervision.
• Perform additional duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Understand and follow specific job‑related SOPs and protocols approved by the medical director.
• Read and interpret local maps, follow dispatch orders, and request additional information when necessary.
• Represent Central EMS and team members professionally in all interactions.
• Manage multiple simultaneous tasks effectively, especially under emergent conditions.
• Read and understand medical terminology (preferred).
• Communicate information clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, regarding patient care, EMS operations, and customer service issues.

Working Environment

EMS work may involve inclement weather, hazardous conditions, psychological stressors, diseases, and other illnesses. Frequent interruptions, high work pressure, challenging personalities, irregular schedules, and extended periods without sleep, food, or breaks may occur and are expected.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements

• Use hands and arms to grasp, handle, reach, push, and pull; some manual dexterity required.
• Stand, walk, sit, climb, or balance frequently; may sit/drive for periods of 2 hours or more.
• Remain alert to verbal and nonverbal communications while driving or assisting medical professionals.
• Lift and/or move up to 180 pounds and occasionally up to 300 pounds or more with assistance.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
