Job summary

The City of Downey seeks part-time Regional Fire Communications Operators for its Fire Department Communications Center to receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls via the CAD system, dispatching firefighting or rescue units as needed.

Part-time shifts include evenings, weekends and holidays, in a 24/7 operation. This role supports multi-agency coordination and requires reliable, precise communication and documentation.

Qualifications

• Education/experience demonstrating knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role.
• High School diploma or equivalent is required.
• Fire dispatcher experience is desirable.
• Clerical/administrative support with public contact is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Receive and respond to requests for emergency services via 911 and other channels.
• Maintain status of equipment and personnel using CAD for optimal coverage.
• Operate multiple radio frequencies and dispatch units as needed.
• Use proper dispatch terminology when communicating with the public.
• Inform command personnel of status and keep logs of communications.
• Familiarize with street locations using maps and systems.
• Cooperate with police and fire agencies during multi-agency incidents.
• Monitor systems and report problems to appropriate agencies promptly.
• Provide pre-arrival medical instructions per EMS dispatch program.
