Job summary

Boston Medical Center (BMC) seeks a Unit Coordinator for the Emergency department on a per diem basis. You will provide technical and clerical support to nursing staff and manage scheduling, workflows, and supply tasks essential to department operations.

The role requires greeting visitors, answering calls, transcribing orders into Epic, preparing discharge paperwork, and maintaining patient records. A High School Diploma or GED and one year of clerical experience are expected, with outpatient

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and clerical support to nursing staff and department operations.
  • Greet visitors, patients, and staff; answer questions and direct to appropriate staff.
  • Answer calls promptly; coordinate with physicians and other departments as needed; inform physicians of admissions.
  • Enter orders into Epic accurately and maintain patient records.
  • Prepare discharge charts and manage documentation; maintain and file test results.

Schedule: Per Diem, (Weekday + Weekend Availability Required)

  • Provide technical assistance to the nursing staff and perform a variety of computer, clerical, scheduling, and supply functions necessary for the operation of the department.
  • Receives and greets visitors, patients, and staff. Responds to questions appropriately, referring items in question to authorized staff.
  • Answers and makes telephone calls promptly and in a courteous manner, which could include physician consults, other departments for assistance, and informing physicians of admissions. Maintains positive communications with other departments.
  • Assists the staff by running errands, delivering specimens and paperwork, and checking mail.
  • Keeps nurses informed of incoming reports, new orders, and other messages.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patient’s rights to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Transcribes physician and nursing orders in an accurate, neat, and timely manner.
  • Assembles, labels, and organizes the medical record for patient admissions.
  • Secures records from previous admission as needed.
  • Accurately enters orders into Epic.
  • Faxes medication orders to pharmacy. Notes dangerous abbreviations and contacts physicians for nurses to get clarification. Notes time called in margin of physician order sheet.
  • Prepares chart for discharge and assures chart is complete. Compiles all discharge paper work.
  • Enters discharges into computer.
  • Notifies administrative manager of unit activities such as, change in patients conditions.
  • Accurately files test results in a timely manner.
  • Copies documents as requested for unit personnel.
  • Increases knowledge and use of hospital computer system as new programs are developed.
  • Maintains and orders clerical supplies for the unit as directed by nurse manager.
  • Reports broken equipment enters work orders into Epic and calls outside vendors regarding special equipment.
  • Reports to and begins work promptly.
  • Gives adequate notice of absenteeism or tardiness.
  • Appearance is professional in accordance with the dress code.
  • Asks appropriate questions within job description, if an unfamiliar circumstance
  • Performs work of equal skills, effort, and responsibility as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Experience: Minimum one-year working of clerical experience
  • Knowledge & Skills: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Computer skills required. Knowledge of medical terminology required. Working in an outpatient setting is preferred.
Compensation Range

$17.50- $26.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
