Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina in Orangeburg, SC seeks an Emergency Department Technician II. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the ED Tech performs multi-skilled tasks to support a patient-centered approach to care and achieve outcomes in a Level III Trauma Emergency Department.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma with EMT or CNA certification, phlebotomy certification for ED tech II, and current BLS. Prior medical setting experience is preferred.

Job Description Summary The Emergency Department Tech has C.N.A. or EMT certification. Conveniently located in Orangeburg, SC at a Level III Trauma Emergency Department! The Emergency Department Technician reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Emergency Department Technician II performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

Job Description Work Environment: May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases and the risk of blood borne diseases. Contact with patient. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accident injuries and illness). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Must be able to handle emergency or crisis situations. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Essential Functions
  • Takes vital signs, height and weight

  • Must possess the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must possess the ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables and standardized situations

  • All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area
Additional Job Description Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma. Certification required as an EMT or CNA. Phlebotomy certification is required for ED tech II. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. Some experience in a medical setting is preferred.

  • 2. Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as taking patient vitals, administering injections, or conducting physical exams
  • 3. Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed
  • 4. Visual acuity and color perception to accurately read medical charts, documents, and monitors
  • 5. Auditory ability to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, as well as to perceive important sounds such as alarms or patient instructions
  • 6. Stamina and resilience to handle the physical and emotional demands of providing patient care, including long shifts and potentially stressful situations
  • 7. Mobility to navigate clinical environments, including moving between patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the facility
  • 8. Compliance with infection control protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment
